Job Description:
We are looking for a Communications Specialist to support our Information Management Systems team.
About the Position:
This position will ensure access to Salt Lake City services, activities, programs, and facilities for those with limited English proficiency. Oversee organizational compliance with local, state, and federal standards by administering citywide language service contracts and provide language accessibility oversight to departments, divisions, and teams. Develop and execute citywide training on best practices, processes, and procedures for the translation and interpretation of internal and external communication materials.
The ideal candidate will have graduated with a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a focus in communications, graphic design, marketing, journalism, or other field closely related to this title and have at least two (2) years of related experience. Education and experience may be substituted one for the other on a year-for-year basis up to four (4) years. Strong preference for candidates with proficiency in English and Spanish.
Position Salary Range:
E27 - $62,379/yr. - $85,156/yr.
The established market rate for this position is $85,156/yr.

Key Responsibilities:
- Creates high-quality communications content to increase outreach and engagement efforts through both independent and collaborative work across the Salt Lake City enterprise.
- May develop communications and engagement resources for use by City departments, divisions, and work groups, including: interactive trainings, best practices, policies, language and accessibility guides, databases, and workflow processes.
- Curates content for official social media accounts and profiles. Work with teams citywide to organize communication content, topics, and flow of information.
- Consults on communication strategies of various scopes and levels of complexity, employing a neutral, over-arching perspective that leverages cross-departmental coordination.
- Tracks metrics on content, views, and overall audience and community engagement. Utilizes analytics reports to gain insight into traffic, demographics, and effectiveness and employs this information to positively affect future outcomes.
- Covers, reports, and promotes City services, initiatives, events, press conferences, and public meetings through social media, digital programming, media relations, and written communications.
- Stays current with engagement, social media, multimedia, and web communication trends and technologies.
- Performs post-production editing of photo and video segments from a variety of sources and in a variety of formats using industry standard tools.
- Administers software resources that increase public engagement and strengthen internal communication networks.
- Manages project priority and delegates to other City communications staff.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a focus in communications, graphic design, marketing, journalism, or other field closely related to this title and at least two (2) years related experience. - Demonstrated ability to convey complex information and ideas clearly, effectively, and professionally in both written and verbal formats, ensuring engagement and understanding across varied audiences.
- Strong multi-faceted project management and organizational skills.
- In-depth knowledge and understanding of social media platforms, their respective participants, and how they can be deployed in accordance with public sector standards.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Windows & Mac OSX operating environment, Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), as well as proper project and file management.
- Public relations, marketing, sales, community engagement, and management experience.
- Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of City staff and community, including but not limited to administrative level City/County/State/Federal officials.
- Knowledge of photo/video creation, editing, and finalization process.
- Possess the facilitation skills needed to forge trusted working relationships within the City’s communication network and communities of practice.
Working Conditions:
- Light physical effort. Intermittent sitting, standing & walking. Comfortable working conditions.
- Regular exposure to stressful situations as a result of human behavior and the demands of the position.
- Working hours may vary. Occasional weekend work and overtime work may be required.
Career Ladder:
- After fully satisfying the job requirements, may be advanced to Communications Specialist II. Promotions are conditional on availability of funding and require divisional recommendation, Department Head approval and the concurrence of the Department of Human Resource Management.
