JOB TITLE: Custodian-Maintenance (Daily Substitute)
REPORTS TO: Is under the immediate direction of the Maintenance Director
Is under the general direction of the Building Principal
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The general duties for Custodians are to maintain safety and cleanliness of classrooms, restrooms, hallways, administrative offices, gyms, auditoriums and any other areas inside and outside each school.
QUALIFICATIONS
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
- Ability to write reports and correspondence
- Basic math skills required (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division)
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Responsible for fulfilling the daily duties at his/her assigned school (determined by administration) and responsible for custodial duties at the school. Supervises one or more building custodians at the school. Required to assign work, train new custodians, inspect work in progress and requisition supplies.
- Instructs building custodians, verbally and in writing, in building and grounds custodial and routine preventative maintenance activities.
- Assists the Supervisor of Maintenance and Operations in assigning and scheduling extra time for custodians.
- Maintains inventory of custodial/maintenance supplies and equipment.
- Cleans and preserves designated spaces, equipment, tools etc. in the building.
- In cooperation with the Supervisor of Maintenance & Operations, the lead custodian will schedule preventative maintenance and repairs on plumbing, custodial equipment, building structure and hardware.
- Assists visiting public utilizing the facilities with directions within the building and in obtaining and setting up needed equipment.
- Snow removal –all custodians must be able to operate in a safe manner using the following equipment but not limited to snow blower/shovel/ice-melt spreader etc.
- As required, supports the maintenance staff, by performing normal operator adjustments and service to facility equipment such as, but not limited to, unit ventilators and fans and maintains records on operational and maintenance activities.
- As directed by the school principal, coordinates the opening and closing of the building.
- Maintains work related records.
- Meets with the building principal on a weekly basis to discuss any personnel, custodial or use of facilities issues.
- Provides input to the building principal and the Supervisor of Maintenance and Operations regarding custodial evaluations.
- Determines rooms to clean and vacuum daily.
- Assist with general, everyday custodial needs of the school.
- Perform other duties that may be assigned by the Principal and/or Custodian Supervisor.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
To supervise the activities of the custodial employees at assigned school. Train staff and monitor activities over the course of the year. Assign tasks to all custodians at assigned school.

The employee frequently is required to reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to sit. The employee frequently must squat, stoop or kneel, reach above the head and reach forward. The employee continuously uses hand strength to grasp tools and climbs on to ladders. The employee will frequently bend or twist at the neck and trunk more than the average person while performing the duties of this job.
The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds such as cleaning supplies and pails. Occasionally the employee will lift and/or move up to 90 lb. such as salt and bulk furniture. The employee will sometimes push/pull items such as tables, scrubbing machines. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
WORK YEAR: 12-months (day to day position)
