Want to keep our streams and the Chesapeake Bay clean for everyone? The Fairfax County Department of Public Works and Environmental Services (DPWES) seeks an Engineering Technician I. Under direct supervision, performs entry level engineering technical support tasks that are routine, such as performing technical research, responding to citizen calls and communicating technical information to contractors, and determining if requirements meet first level program compliance; and performs related work as required. The ideal candidate will possess the following skills:
- Supports and assists in the operation of specialized video inspection equipment and software on mobile platforms to collect video inspection field data from storm or sanitary sewer pipes and structures.
- Uses the Information Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) system to document work in work orders
- Maintains and updates files in the Storm Drainage work group.
- Monitors contractor's work and ensures that contractors and county employees adhere to all safety requirements.
- Performs field inspections to evaluate contractor compliance to contract specifications.
- Periodically meets with MSMD staff to discuss inspection results and observations.
- Responds to emergency calls and meets with homeowners and other county agency staff or entities as needed to review and/or discuss purpose of collected data.

Note: This position is considered an essential position and is required to be available 24 hours a day/seven days a week (24/7) to respond and assist with snow, flooding and other designated emergencies on an as-needed basis.
Employment Standards
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to high school graduation or a GED issued by a state department of education; and one year of engineering technical support work experience or one year of post-secondary vocational trade school or completion of one year of an applied science associate's degree.
CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
- A valid driver's license.
- VDOT Work Zone Traffic Control Certification (Flagger) within 12 months of hire.
- Pipe Assessment Certification Program (PACP) within 12 months of hire.
- Manhole Assessment Certification Program (MACP) within 12 months of hire.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check and driving record check to the satisfaction of the employer.
The appointee to this position will be required to be available twenty-four hours a day/seven days a week (24/7) to respond to snow, flooding, and other designated emergencies on an as needed basis.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- One or more years of knowledge in collecting storm sewer inspection data and identifying and coding storm conveyance system asset defects.
- One or more years of information technology skills including computerized maintenance management systems, GIS and Microsoft office automation.
- Must be highly motivated and demonstrate knowledge of the inspection process.
- One or more years of ability to apply basic engineering principles.
- One or more years of experience in managing, utilizing, and repairing communication equipment.
- Possess the skills oriented toward providing outstanding customer service to stakeholders.
- Experience monitoring contractor's work for compliance with contract specifications.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to operate a motor vehicle to drive to/from job sites, off-site meetings, training and/or conferences. Ability to operate keyboard driven equipment. Ability to push, pull, stoop, walk, climb, bend, lift and carry objects weighing up to 90 lbs. with assistance and ability to walk/traverse rough, icy, broken terrain, go up and down steep hills, slopes and steps at a sustained rate. Candidate must be physically and mentally capable of performing confined space entry operations with entry via 21" manholes with vertical descent using integral or portable ladders. Physically and mentally able to use all applicable personal protective equipment along with documentation in an outdoor and underground environment including hardhat, eye protection, hearing protection, safety footwear, long pants, sleeved shirt, and personal fall arrest harness, emergency retrieval systems and atmospheric monitoring equipment. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
