Job Summary
Performs preventive/corrective maintenance and inspections on all light/medium/heavy duty vehicles and components (see equipment list) using a variety of shop equipment and tooling. Provides full assistance to the Auto/Heavy Equipment Technicians including vehicle transport, operation, and records required information into the Fleet Management Information System (FMIS).
Essential Job Functions
Assists technicians in the diagnosis and repair of vehicles and equipment. Performs inspections and preventive/corrective maintenance on vehicles and equipment. Fuels, washes, and transports vehicles and equipment. Removes and installs tires, wheels, and other wheel end components. Performs testing of charging/starting system, fluids, and some engine functions. Lubricates vehicles and equipment. Exchanges engine/transmission/differential fluids. Removes and installs some vehicle and equipment components. Sources and orders parts, components and materials utilizing the Fleet Management Information System (FMIS). Keeps accurate records of repairs and maintenance utilizing the FMIS. Maintains MSD-issued tools and equipment. Cleans Fleet Services work area. Perform other duties as assigned or as judgment/necessity dictates.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Necessary to the Work
Knowledge of automotive, truck and heavy equipment operation; knowledge of the correct usage of all maintenance tools and instruments; knowledge of standard and metric measurements; ability to properly use hand tools and shop equipment; ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; ability to perform physically demanding tasks as outlined above; ability to work under adverse working conditions such as inclement weather; ability to work effectively under heavy, unpredictable surges in workload; ability to work various shifts and overtime.
Minimum Requirements
High School Diploma or GED; one or more years of experience in the automotive or truck maintenance field or completion of one year of vocational training in an automotive or diesel program; an equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted. Must possess a valid driver’s license. Must obtain a CDL-Class A with N endorsement within 6 months. Must obtain ASE Certifications in A5, T4, and T8 within 6 months of meeting minimum ASE experience requirements of 2 years. Must have safe work and driving habits.
