Pipe Layer – Job Responsibilities
Prepare and Grade Trenches
- Excavate and prepare trenches for laying pipes according to plans and specifications.
- Ensure proper slope and grade for drainage or flow.
Lay Pipes Accurately
- Install various types of pipes (e.g., water, sewer, storm drain, gas) using levels, lasers, and other tools.
- Align pipes and seal joints using cement, glue, or welding as needed.
Read Blueprints and Plans
- Interpret construction drawings and specifications to determine layout and pipe installation procedures.
Install Fittings and Fixtures
- Connect pipes to manholes, catch basins, tanks, and other structures.
- Install valves, couplings, and other necessary pipe components.
Ensure Safety and Compliance
- Follow safety protocols and use protective equipment at all times.
- Comply with local building codes, OSHA regulations, and environmental guidelines.
Backfilling and Compacting
- Backfill completed pipe installations and compact soil to prevent shifting or settling.
- Repair roadways or other surfaces after pipe installation as necessary.
Operate and Maintain Tools and Equipment
- Use trenchers, compactors, laser levels, pipe cutters, and other hand/power tools.
- Perform routine maintenance on tools and machinery used.
Collaborate with Crew Members
- Work closely with equipment operators, supervisors, and other laborers to ensure efficient and timely completion of tasks.
Troubleshoot and Repair Pipes
- Locate and repair damaged or leaking pipe sections when necessary.
- Replace or adjust faulty fittings.
Document Work and Report Issues
- Maintain records of materials used and work completed.
- Report any hazards, obstacles, or irregularities to supervisors.
Requirements:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Ability to lift heavy objects and perform physically demanding tasks
- Good communication skills and ability to work in a team environment
- Strong focus on safety and attention to detail
- Willingness to learn and take on new tasks
- Experience in construction or excavation is required
- Must have a clean background
- VALID DRIVER LICENSE REQUIRED: NO EXCEPTIONS

Summary
RW Excavation is seeking a skilled and reliable Pipe Layer to join our growing team. In this role, you’ll be responsible for installing and maintaining underground piping systems for water, sewer, and storm drainage projects. You will work closely with equipment operators, foremen, and other crew members to ensure safe, accurate, and efficient pipe installation according to project plans and local regulations. The ideal candidate has experience in trench work, understands proper grading and slope requirements, and takes pride in delivering high-quality workmanship.
