Minimum Qualifications
Three years of experience as a laboratory technician; OR
An associate or bachelor’s degree in medical technology, nursing, clinical laboratory science, or a biological, physical, or chemical science plus two years of experience as a laboratory technician; OR
Certification as a Laboratory Animal Technician by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science plus two years of experience as a laboratory technician; OR
Certification as a Laboratory Animal Technologist by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science plus one year of experience as a laboratory technician.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:
Positions in Human Testing Laboratory environments must be licensed to practice as either a Laboratory Assistant or a Clinical Laboratory Scientist-Technician in the State of Louisiana as required by Louisiana Clinical Laboratory Personnel Law R.S. 37:1311-1329 and the Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners.

Job Duties:
EXAMPLES BELOW ARE A BRIEF SAMPLE OF COMMON DUTIES ASSOCIATED WITH THIS JOB TITLE. NOT ALL POSSIBLE TASKS ARE INCLUDED.
Supervises chemical tests and analyses of body fluids and other materials related to medicine and/or research.
Supervises the isolation, typing, and grouping of bacteria and fungi present in body fluids.
Supervises special diet preparations and feeds designated animals.
Assists higher level laboratory personnel in teaching, clinical, or research procedures.
Directs the collection of laboratory samples and the setting-up of routine laboratory tests.
IN AN ANIMAL LABORATORY
Oversees and maintains up to date records, animal identification, and treatment cards.
Oversees stocking and maintaining of inventory in pharmacy, surgery suite, and laboratories.
Performs euthanasia procedures on selected animals.
Removes dead animals from cages and disposes of the animal bodies.
Observes animals and reports signs of sickness to higher level laboratory personnel and/or Veterinarian.

PLEASE NOTE:
The incumbent will be performing animal care duties. Applicants who have a fear of large animals need not apply. Preferred applicants will be capable of the following:
- Ability to lift 50 lbs.
- Stand for long periods
- Climb ladders & stairs
- Work with arms above the head for periods of 5-10 minutes
- Perform basic sanitation practices-mopping, scrubbing, pressure washing
- Ability to withstand extreme temperatures
- Operate motor vehicle
- Distinguish colors
- Follow oral and written instructions
- Understand Standard Operating Procedures and follow them
- Have tolerance to animal hair and dander
- Write legibly
- Problem solve
