The Lead Certified Phlebotomy Technician will perform venous and capillary blood collections on all ages of patients. The Aspirant will strive to improve the patient continuity of care by monitoring daily activities, troubleshooting, documenting problems and providing information for improvement. The Aspirant prepares all types of laboratory specimens for submission to a reference laboratory or for testing within the confines of the place of work; and may perform waived test procedures. Travel between clinics to train and set standards for assigned phlebotomists to follow strict protocols which ensure accuracy in the specimens collected, processed. Maintains weekly staff work schedule for assigned clinic locations.
Essential Functions of the Job:
- Collect specimens according to current best practice by venous procedures (venipuncture) and capillary collection procedures (finger sticks) on adults and (heel sticks) on pediatric patients, observing strict principles of antisepsis to prevent infection in the patient or contamination of specimens
- Serve as a resource to phlebotomy and patient service representatives
- Oversee daily activity of phlebotomists and students with focus on safe patient care
- Perform waived testing under the direction of the laboratory supervisor
- Performs quality control protocols as required
- Provides oversight, training, and leadership at assigned lab locations with daily operations in accordance with supervisor instructions
- Capable of performing, teaching and monitoring new staff and external students
- Reports concern unusual findings or observations from providers, nurses, and laboratory staff to lab supervisor and/or lab manager
- Adhere to policies and procedure established by San Ysidro Health
- Assist in eliminating waste and improving supply usage
- Monitoring daily quality controls for each in-house test
- Review and follow up on billing issues, and result matching issues (i.e. Quest, LabCorp and Sharp Lab trailers; Indigent Patient Program (IPP) accounts)
- Communicate effectively with others to accomplish goals and objectives
- Able to multi-task, prioritize while still maintaining efficiency when circumstances dictate and willingly offer assistance to others when the need arises
- Order supplies and monitor inventory
- Monitor and report productivity
- Attend meetings as required and participate in meetings and in-service meetings
- Maintains established departmental policies and objectives, quality assurance program, safety, environmental and infection control standards
- Maintains and ensures cleanliness and good operation of associated work areas and equipment
- Assist with gathering data for competency assessment
- Assist in point of care training for various clinic personnel
- Additional duties as assigned
Experience Required:
- Minimum 2 years experience working in a laboratory setting as a Certified Phlebotomy Technician
- High School or equivalent
- Phlebotomy Certification issued by the State of California Department of Health Services
- American Heart Association Basic Life Saver (BLS) Card
- Must have excellent verbal and electronic communication and ability to communicate effectively in English
- Crisis Management
- Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office Apps, and quality control requirements
- Computers, Phones, Centrifuges, HemoCue, Afinion 2 analyze, BD Veritor Plus Analyzer system and CLINITEK Status+ Urine Analyzer
- Frequent prolonged standing/walking/bending/kneeling
- Repetitive use of hands, sample grasping, reaching, body and hand twisting
- Exposed to infection from disease-bearing specimens; exposed to odorous chemicals and specimens
- Subject to varying and unpredictable situations; occasionally subjected to irregular hours
- Lifting and Carrying up 20 lbs., Pulling up 10 lbs.
- Availability to work occasional irregular hours including weekends and evenings and travel to satellite labs for routine visits
