The Lead Safety and Security Counselor applies specialized knowledge and abilities in the deployment of security resources; investigation and detection of criminal and quasi-criminal activity in the school system; assists the school administration in the maintenance of law and order in the school creating a safe environment for study; does related work as required.

Detailed Description
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
Coordinates with principals to develop security plan for assigned school;
Conducts daily roll-calls and deploy Safety and Security Assistants and Counselors to assignments;
Ensures that subordinates are provided with position descriptions and expectations;
Conducts yearly evaluations with subordinates;
Conducts investigations into minor disciplinary matters involving subordinates and makes recommendations to the Director;
Conducts counseling sessions as necessary with subordinates;
Maintains records and prepares reports of investigation, juvenile arbitration reports and charging documents as necessary to officially bring the action to court;Investigates and detects criminal and quasi-criminal activity in the school system;
Identifies those involved in such activity by interviewing complainants and witnesses, by observation and collection of physical evidence;
Assists school administration in the maintenance of law and order in the school creating a safe environment for study;
Assists Principal(s) in developing programs that will reduce the levels of vulnerability to criminal acts;
Attends and assists with security functions during extra-curricular activities;
Reports findings to the Principal, Field Supervisor, Director of Safety and Security Services and when required, to the appropriate police agency;
Appears as a witness or complainant in court proceedings;
Provides oversight and guidance relative to matters of school security, as required; and
Performs other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS:
The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
Considerable experience in the security and investigative field, preferably enforcement officer current or retired within 5 years;
Willingness to participate in scheduled training regarding Restorative Practices;
Ability to maintain a valid motor vehicle license;
Good knowledge of modern methods and practices of criminal investigation and crime prevention techniques and applicable laws;
Ability to conduct thorough investigations and follow them through to logical conclusion;
Ability to deal tactfully with subordinates and school personnel to gain their support and cooperation;
Keen sense of observation and memory;
Good judgment and sound reasoning;
Ability to physically meet the demands for this position; andExcellent communication skills including both written and oral capabilities.
EDUCATION AND/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Completion of a standard high school course supplemented by college level training in law enforcement and criminal investigation; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Good knowledge of modern methods and practices of criminal investigative field, preferably some experience as a police officer or related law enforcement field. Ability to successfully complete supervisors training.
CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
Successful completion of a certified Maryland Police Training Academy; holds or is eligible for Maryland State Compliance certification and ability to obtain a Maryland State Police Commission.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provides guidance and oversight to Safety and Security Counselors and Assistants.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally push or lift up to 25 lbs.
