Position Overview:
The Logistics Transportation Specialist (CDL Driver) plays a critical role in DMA’s supply chain and logistics operations, ensuring the safe, timely, and efficient transportation of goods between warehouse, production, vendor, and customer locations. This position requires a reliable and safety-focused individual with a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and a strong knowledge of DOT regulations, freight handling procedures, and vehicle maintenance. The role may include operating various types of trucks, assisting with loading and unloading, and supporting warehouse activities as needed.
The Logistics Transportation Specialist is accountable for maintaining delivery schedules, ensuring load security, inspecting equipment before and after trips, and keeping accurate records of transportation activity. This position represents the company in the field and must uphold high standards of professionalism, safety, and customer service.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Transportation Operations
- Operate commercial vehicles in compliance with DOT and company safety regulations.
- Transport goods, materials, and equipment between DMA facilities, vendors, and customer locations.
- Follow designated routes and delivery schedules while adapting to real-time changes as necessary.
2. Vehicle Inspection & Maintenance
- Conduct pre- and post-trip inspections to ensure vehicle safety and report mechanical issues.
- Monitor and maintain vehicle cleanliness and operating condition.
- Coordinate with the fleet manager or maintenance team to schedule repairs or routine service.
3. Load Management & Safety
- Ensure proper loading and unloading of freight, using lifting equipment or assisting warehouse staff when required.
- Verify load documentation and confirm load integrity and security in accordance with DOT regulations.
- Comply with safety procedures including weight limits, tie-down methods, and hazardous material handling if applicable.
4. Documentation & Reporting
- Maintain accurate delivery logs, inspection reports, fuel receipts, and trip documentation.
- Use electronic logging devices (ELDs) or other tracking tools to comply with Hours of Service (HOS) requirements.
- Report delays, accidents, or safety concerns to dispatch or supervisor in a timely manner.
5. Customer Service & Company Representation
- Act as a representative of DMA when delivering goods to customers, vendors, or third-party facilities.
- Communicate professionally with dispatch, warehouse teams, and external contacts to ensure smooth operations.
- Provide feedback from the field regarding delivery issues or logistical improvements.
6. Warehouse Support (As Needed)
- Assist with warehouse tasks such as inventory movement, material staging, or product handling during downtime or at delivery locations.
- Operate forklifts or other material handling equipment as required (training provided if necessary).
7. Additional Responsibilities
- Perform other duties as assigned in support of logistics, fleet operations, or warehouse efficiency.
Reporting Structure:
- Reports directly to the Inventory Control and Transportation Manager.
- This position has no direct reports but collaborates closely with warehouse, dispatch, and customer service teams.
Requirements
Key Requirements:
- Experience: Minimum of 2 years of commercial driving experience with a clean driving record. Experience in freight delivery, logistics, or warehouse environments is preferred. Knowledge of basic vehicle mechanics and safety practices is required.
- Education: High school diploma or GED required. Completion of a formal CDL training program or equivalent commercial driving experience is required.
- Licensing & Certification: Must possess a valid Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and a current DOT Medical Certificate. Forklift certification is a plus or must be willing to obtain.
- Skills: Must demonstrate strong route planning and time management skills. Candidates should be highly organized, self-motivated, and capable of working independently or as part of a team. Excellent attention to detail, safety orientation, and communication skills are essential.
- Knowledge: Must have working knowledge of DOT regulations, hours-of-service rules, vehicle safety procedures, and cargo handling protocols. Familiarity with GPS navigation systems, ELDs, and shipping documentation is required. Understanding of warehouse and supply chain processes is beneficial.
- Technology: Must be proficient with basic digital tools such as GPS, mobile communication apps, and electronic logbooks. Ability to complete digital forms and communicate via email or dispatch software is expected.
Physical Requirements:
This role is primarily vehicle- and warehouse-based with regular requirements related to driving, loading and unloading freight, and performing equipment inspections.
- Mobility: Must be able to enter/exit trucks, trailers, and loading docks regularly throughout the shift.
- Standing and Walking: Required for loading, unloading, and warehouse assistance.
- Lifting and Carrying: Frequently required to lift up to 50 pounds; may involve carrying, pushing, or pulling heavy loads.
- Posture and Motion: Regular driving, bending, reaching, climbing in/out of vehicles and trailers.
- Vision and Hearing: Close and distance vision, peripheral vision, and hearing sufficient to drive and operate safely in varying conditions.
- Work Environment: Exposure to varying outdoor weather conditions, traffic, noise, and warehouse environments.
Travel Requirements:
This position involves local and regional travel (typically within the same state or region) with occasional overnight trips depending on delivery needs. No long-haul (OTR) routes are required unless specified. Estimated travel is 75–90% of the time.
