Position Description
The Tacoma Venues & Events Department (TVE) is seeking to hire a full-time Maintenance Worker II to join the Operations Department for the Tacoma Dome and Greater Tacoma Convention Center. This position is responsible for the operation and maintenance of special purpose facilities and equipment.
Essential Duties
- Set-up and tear-down of tables, chairs, risers, stages and lighting equipment, sports equipment and other related equipment associated with the various facilities
- Repair and maintenance of facilities and equipment including carpentry, painting, drywall, fleet, and miscellaneous systems in the maintenance of public access, office and parking areas;
- Operate a variety of tools, equipment, and machinery such as forklifts, trucks, electric carts, small hand tools, and floor scrubbers, and carpet cleaning equipment
- May provide work direction to part-time or temporary workers or oversee event operations
- Working knowledge of welding and rigging is preferred.
- Perform routine maintenance and care for parking lots, grounds, lawn, and landscaping maintenance
- Related duties as assigned

Qualifications
An equivalent combination to: two years' experience in the building trades industry performing building maintenance, custodial, and grounds maintenance work; or two years' apprentice training in the carpentry, metal, pipe-fitting or electrical trades.
Licenses, Certifications and Other Legal Requirements
Valid Washington Driver's License at time of appointment with maintenance thereafter.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in indoor and outdoor environments at multiple sport and entertainment venues and is subject to adverse weather conditions, fumes/chemicals, lifting up to 75 pounds, standing, walking, stooping, crawling, and climbing a variety of equipment. Must be able to work in a safe and efficient manner in a fast-paced environment.
Work Hours:
Non-traditional work hours are required for this position. This position requires the employee to work on a variety of shifts, including day, swing and graveyard. Employees must be available and willing to work on any shift, and on any day of the week (including weekends and holidays).
Knowledge & Skills
- Common practices, materials and tools utilized in conversion and custodial activities at a multi-purpose facility
- Applications of various cleaning solvents and equipment.
- Proper methods of storing equipment, machinery and supplies.
- Modern cleaning methods including basic methods of cleaning and preserving floors, carpets, furniture, walls and fixtures.
- Record Keeping Techniques
- Requirements of maintaining buildings in a safe, clean and orderly condition.
- Understand and follow oral and written directions.
- Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
- Perform heavy manual labor.
- Meet schedules and time lines.

Examination Process:
This is a competitive selection process. Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will have their responses to the Supplemental Questionnaire scored as the experience and training (E&T) test which will be used to establish an eligibility list for this job classification. Applicants who pass the exam will be placed on an Eligibility List for potential interview and hiring consideration. Those who closely meet the business needs of the department may be invited to participate in the interview process.
Candidates who are eligible for Veteran's Preference scoring criteria must attach a copy of their DD-214 member copy 4, (proof of military discharge form) at time of application, to be eligible for review for Veteran's Preference points, with redacted birth date and social security numbers.

This position is covered by a Labor Agreement between The City of Tacoma and the Teamsters Local Union no. 117, Public Assembly Facilities (Tacoma Venues & Events) Unit. An employee in this position will be required to join the union within 30 days of hire. New employees must successfully complete a nine-month probationary period prior to obtaining permanent status in this classification.
