POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The Public Works Department is looking for a Maintenance Worker II who will perform skilled functions that support the maintenance of parks and landscaping at other City owned properties. The successful candidate will be responsible for performing duties normally involving physical labor including but not limited to:


  • Operating a variety of light-to-medium equipment and machinery such as large trucks with or without trailers, dump trucks, loaders, backhoes, mowers, and/or other related equipment.
  • Performing skilled work in a variety of grounds maintenance duties in park areas, landscapes, and/or other open areas, including mowing and edging turf, watering, weeding, pruning trees, shrubs and hedges; and/or other miscellaneous maintenance projects.
  • Performing minor repairs/improvements and maintaining the cleanliness and orderliness of park grounds (turf, shrubs, trees and vegetation), facilities (restrooms and picnic shelters) and infrastructure (parking lots, tables, benches and irrigation systems).
  • Operating and performing minor repairs on hand-held power and landscaping tools.
  • Operating and performing minor upkeep on trucks, tractors, mowers or other light automative mechanical equipment.
  • May perform repairs and/or construction of park trails such as grading and compacting.
  • Assisting with community events tasks such as hanging banners and setting up and taking down canopies and other event equipment.

The Maintenance Worker II is a regular, non-exempt position with a normal work schedule of four 10-hour days per week and may require working on weekends. The position is covered under the terms of the collective bargaining agreement between Teamsters Local 58 and the City of Ridgefield.


This is the full journey level class in the Maintenance Worker series. Employees within this class are distinguished from Maintenance Worker I by the performance of the full range of maintenance duties as assigned including the operation of applicable vehicular and stationary equipment and complex maintenance and construction tasks.

Leave benefits currently include vacation accrual up to 80 hours during your first year of employment, 11 paid holidays per year, 3 additional paid floating holidays, and 8 hours accrued sick leave each month.

Such as career-based tuition reimbursement, degree and certification incentives, and membership fees for professional organizations. Enrollment in the Public Employees Retirement System (PERS) and the Western Conference of Teamsters Pension Trust Fund is automatic.


QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.


  • Education: A high school diploma or
  • Experience: Three years’ general work experience in construction, operation and maintenance of streets, drainage or facilities.
  • License: Have a valid driver’s license with a satisfactory driving
  • Certifications: Possession of a Washington State Commercial Driver’s License.
  • Possession of or Ability to obtain certifications/training:
    • Pesticide license within six (6) months of
    • An Industrial First Aid/CPR Card, and a Flagging and Traffic Control Card within six (6) months of
    • Defensive Driving, Confined Space, Fall Protection, Fire Extinguisher, and Trenching and Shoring training within one year of employment.
  • Knowledge of the following is strongly preferred:
    • Parks maintenance and
    • Methods and techniques of construction, maintenance and repair related
    • Operational characteristics of mechanical equipment and
    • Safe Work
  • Ability to:
    • Work and communicate effectively as part of a
    • Use tact and good judgment in responding to questions from the general
    • Take the initiative to get work done with a positive “can do”
    • Take direction well, work independently, fast learner, and good
    • Lift a minimum of 50
