Responsibilities:
- Work with patients to determine if they can read an eye chart or if they can see better with glasses.
- Use specialized equipment to screen for cataracts, glaucoma, diabetes, and other eye conditions.
- Assist ophthalmologists by performing routine tests and measurements.
MAJOR DUTIES:
1. Ensures HIPAA compliance by maintaining confidentiality of personal and financial information.
2. Ensure HITECH compliance by logging off unattended work stations and using a unique personal password to access PHI.
3. Follows HIPAA guidelines in reporting any HIPAA violation
4. Interact with all patients using the level of respect and professionalism required by this practice.
5. Obtain patient history to include chief complaint, history of present illness, past history (ocular and general), family history (ocular and general), and history of allergies and medications.
6. Perform accurate and consistent documentation and measurement tasks to include Visual acuity, Manual automated lensometry, Confrontational visual fields, Stereo testing, Evaluation of motility, Pupillary function tests, Color plates, Applanation tonometry, and Humphrey visual field testing.
7. Instrument maintenance to include; replacing bulbs, check connections, report any difficulty to Clinical Supervisor.
8. Determine which patient should be taken next from the waiting room to have testing initiated. Escort patients from the waiting room for the data collection. Following testing, advise as to who will see them next and make them comfortable during their wait.
9. Maintain a smooth flow of patients to the physician, altering the test sequence as required. Escort patients from the clinical area to the check-out station or optical dispensary when necessary.
10. Assist in screenings as needed, OCT, fundus photography, corneal topography, pachymetry and tearlab
11. Seek advice from more senior staff as necessary, never performing beyond capabilities.
12. Maintain stock levels and cleanliness of exam lanes.
13. Perform other duties as assigned.
14. Become JCAHPO certified as a COA or Certified Ophthalmic Scribe within two years of hire date.
