Job description:
The Optometrist provides comprehensive eye care services to inmates within the facility. The role involves diagnosing, treating, and managing eye conditions and vision problems in a unique correctional environment. The position emphasizes primary eye care, including the use of observation, instruments, and pharmaceutical agents to assess visual acuity, perception, focus, coordination, and diagnose ocular diseases
Key Responsibilities
- Eye Examinations and Diagnosis:
- Conduct comprehensive eye examinations to assess visual acuity and diagnose ocular conditions such as allergies, infections, dry eyes, glaucoma, and other eye diseases.
- Use state-of-the-art diagnostic tools, including visual field analyzers, fundus cameras, and optical coherence tomography (OCT), to screen for abnormalities.
- Prescribe corrective lenses (glasses or contact lenses) and other vision aids as needed, in accordance with state laws.
- Treatment and Management:
- Provide treatment for diagnosed eye conditions, including prescribing medications for eye diseases if permitted by California state law.
- Manage ocular diseases and coordinate care with other healthcare providers when necessary, including referrals to ophthalmologists for advanced conditions like low vision care or surgical needs.
- Patient Interaction:
- Meet with patients (inmates) to review assessment results, discuss concerns, and educate them on proper eye care.
- Act as a liaison between patients and other healthcare providers, addressing questions and providing follow-up care.
- Administrative Duties:
- Maintain accurate patient records using electronic medical record systems (e.g., MaximEyes or similar).
- Ensure compliance with CDCR protocols, state laws, and clinical standards, including HIPAA and patient confidentiality requirements.
- Collaborate with a team of healthcare professionals, including technicians and scribes, to ensure smooth clinic operations.
- Specialized Care:
- Provide care for specific conditions such as allergies, infectious diseases, and other ocular issues common in a correctional setting.
- Perform vision screenings and manage post-operative care for patients referred by other providers (e.g., post-cataract surgery follow-ups).
Qualifications and Requirements
- Education:
- Doctor of Optometry (O.D.) degree from an accredited institution.
- Licensure and Certifications:
- Valid and current license to practice optometry issued by the California State Board of Optometry.
- Certification in Therapeutic Pharmaceutical Agents (TPA) and Therapeutic Glaucoma (TPG/TGL) required.
- Active California DEA and Furnishing license preferred.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification may be required.
- Experience:
- Minimum 3+ years of experience as an optometrist is required.
- Experience in a correctional or public health setting is a plus but not mandatory.
- Skills and Competencies:
- Strong clinical skills in optometric practices and procedures.
- Excellent patient care and communication skills, with the ability to work with diverse populations, including inmates.
- Proficiency in medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology related to eye care.
- Ability to use modern diagnostic equipment (e.g., Zeiss Fundus Camera, Optovue OCT, Optomap).
- Organizational and time management skills to handle a high patient volume (approximately 20 patients per day).
- Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems.
- Bilingual skills (e.g., Spanish) are a plus but not required.
