The Houston SPCA is seeking a skilled and compassionate Veterinary Technician to support the launch and success of our high-volume, affordable Dental Services Program within the Wellness Clinic. This part-time role focuses primarily on dental procedures and requires strong proficiency in anesthesia monitoring and patient care before, during, and after dental treatment. the technician will also be expected to assist with regular clinic appointments. This includes providing support during wellness visits, sick exams, and routine clinical tasks to ensure consistent, high-quality care for all patients.
The clinic is fast-paced and supported by a collaborative team of veterinarians, technicians, assistants, and a practice manager. On days when dental procedures are not scheduled, the technician will support the clinic’s regular outpatient services, assisting with wellness exams, vaccines, diagnostics, and treatment of minor conditions. The technician must be comfortable working in a dynamic, high-caseload environment with minimal supervision.
Essential Functions of the Position:
- Prepare patients for dental procedures, including pre-anesthetic evaluation, IV catheter placement, and induction.
- Monitor anesthesia during dental procedures, including use of monitoring equipment (e.g., ECG, pulse oximeter, blood pressure monitor).
- Understands normal vital parameters and alerts doctor when abnormal.
- Able to prepare and administer intravenous & subcutaneous fluids.
- Provide post-procedure recovery care and monitor patients during anesthesia recovery.
- Maintain dental and anesthesia equipment, ensuring it is clean, functional, and properly stocked.
- Assist veterinarians during outpatient clinic appointments as needed, including patient handling, sample collection and medication administration.
- Accurately document procedures, anesthesia logs, and patient medical records using veterinary software.
- Educate clients on dental care, preventive health, and post-procedure instructions.
- Follow established protocols and standards of care as outlined by the Houston SPCA.
- Represent the Houston SPCA professionally at all times.
- Perform additional tasks as assigned.
