Facility and Unit Information

Union Medical Center (UMC) is an acute care hospital located in rural Union, SC. As part of Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System (SRHS), UMC offers access to inpatient care, outpatient services, and a multi-specialty physician group all under one roof, ensuring patients receive the highest standard of care. UMC opened the doors of our new state-of-the-art, 99k+ square foot facility in February 2025. UMC’s roots date back to 1921, when it was founded as Wallace Thomson Hospital, and we are proud to have been serving the Union community for over 100 years. With the new facility, we look forward to continuing to serve our community for generations to come!


UMC has an Acute Care Inpatient Medical Telemetry Unit that has 12 beds, with an average daily census of 8 patients. This unit is small and family oriented, allowing compassionate patient care. The primary populations served are adult patients needing medical care related to cardiac abnormalities, chest pain, CHF, stroke, COPD, diabetes, electrolyte abnormalities and other chronic medical conditions. Inpatient hospice care and wound care are also offered on this floor.


Position Summary

The Patient Care Associate (PCA) is responsible for patient related clerical activities, unit clerical duties, computerized order entry procedures, and other unit activities, as applicable. The PCA must be able to provide and understand the specific communication needs of patients, families, and visitors. Under the direction of a Registered Nurse, the PCA provides focused non-licensed clinical care for patients throughout the age continuum including phlebotomy, basic nursing skills, etc., and environmental assistance to facilitate quality service and improve patient outcomes. The PCA will document and communicate with team members in a timely manner the patient progress, needs and problems. Collaborates with Leadership in developing and implementing the Spartanburg Regional Healthcare Systems, Mission, and Goals.


Minimum Requirements

Education

  • High School Graduate or equivalent
  • 17-year-olds that will obtain a High School Diploma or GED within six months

  • Performs personal hygiene care with respect to privacy, dignity and needs of the patient
  • Offers back rubs, prepares for meal times and sleep hours

  • Performs vital signs, weights/heights, intakes and outputs with accuracy and within established time frame and/or as requested.

  • Provides care relative to the age-specific needs of the patient on the unit by demonstrating knowledge of the principles of growth and development
