General Purpose of Job:

The RN Patient Safety Specialist, Lead will assist leadership in developing the patient safety strategy and implementing the patient safety program in the Sparrow Health System. This role will collaborate with others within the system towards process improvements to reduce errors and other factors that contribute to unintended adverse patient outcomes. The RN Patient Safety Specialist, Lead uses cause solving skills to identify risks and weaknesses in the system, works with teams to create action plans to prevent harm, creates and provides education on system-based causes for medical error, consults with leadership and staff and provides national best practices regarding effective reliability and patient safety strategies to others within the organization.


Essential Duties:

This job description is intended to cover the minimum essential duties assigned on a regular basis. Caregivers may be asked to perform additional duties as assigned by their leader. Leadership has the right to alter or modify the duties of the position.

  • The RN Patient Safety Specialist, Lead is responsible for monitoring and responding to patient safety and quality outcomes.
  • Works with the Director of Patient Safety to develop the cause solving program, provide education on cause solving principles, implement the cause solving program, and monitor metrics to ensure success of the program.
  • Works with the Director of Patient Safety in organizational efforts to continuously improve the safety, effectiveness, efficiency, patient-centeredness, equity, and timeliness of health care services to all patients.
  • Assist with implementation of reliable systems to support evidence-based care to improve clinical outcomes and patient safety.
  • Leads root cause analysis to establish timelines and priorities for projects; coordinates action plans, and monitors results that are consistent with the overall goals.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards for Patient Safety.
  • Assesses the organization’s current Patient Safety culture and assists with developing and implementing creative strategies to improve the safety culture.
  • Lead and participate in various committee as it relates to Patient Safety.

Job Requirements

General Requirements
License / Certification: • State of Michigan RN license.

Work Experience
• A minimum of 3 years of progressively responsible professional work experience relative to patient safety. • Minimum 3 years of clinical process improvement in a healthcare setting, preferred.

Education
• Bachelor’s degree in nursing • Master’s degree in nursing or related field preferred.

Specialized Knowledge and Skills
• Strong business acumen and capability to effectively communicate with all levels of leadership. • Ability to drive change throughout the organization. • Ability to motivate and develop people to achieve results. • Skilled communicator with strong ability to influence others, coach, mentor, and motivator. • Ability to draw insightful impressions from objective data to identify process and organizational culture issues in need of improvement. • Skilled at facilitating multi-disciplinary meetings with physicians, clinicians, leaders, and frontline team members. • Ability to implement multiple simultaneous projects. • Ability to balance/prioritize tasks and projects. • High degree of innovation and creative problem solving. • Knowledge of Joint Commission, CMS Conditions of Participation, standards and survey process. • Skilled in analytics and driving results through data.
