Pay Range
$33.48 - $40.99 Hourly

Job Description
We are seeking a Plutonium Laboratory Technician to support plutonium chemistry and materials science activities within the Nuclear Materials Program. You will work onsite as a fissile material handler in the metallurgy, aqueous chemistry, or pyrochemistry laboratories. Primary responsibilities include: laboratory operations; nuclear materials inventory management; equipment maintenance and troubleshooting; and the coordination of work control activities for new or modified operations. Comprehensive on-the-job training will be provided. This position is in the Chemistry of Nuclear Materials group within the Materials Science Division, supporting the Nuclear Materials Program.
This position requires full-time on-site presence due to the nature of the work.
You will
- Handle fissile materials and maintain related certifications; adhere to defined practices and procedures.
- Safely work in gloveboxes and other contamination enclosures.
- Perform fissile materials processing which may include sample or solutions preparation, heat treating, and/or materials characterization.
- Perform equipment maintenance, repair, or installation.
- Maintain continuous supply of consumables and ensure availability of critical spare system components.
- Perform accountable materials inventory.
- Support operations through the work planning and control process.
- Contribute to the fulfillment of technical projects and organizational objectives.
- Function as a productive member of a team while exemplifying a high level of professionalism.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
- A.S. degree in Chemistry, Physics, Engineering Technology or a closely related field; or Certificate in Electron Microscopy; or experience working in a plutonium facility as a fissile material handler; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Ability to understand the risk mitigation strategies associated with handling hazardous chemicals and materials.
- Detail-oriented nature required to work deliberately in a highly regulated nuclear facility while complying with numerous safety and security regulations.
- Curiosity and willingness to ask technical/scientific questions; commitment to continuous improvement and education.
- Ability to balance workload according to program priorities, to solve problems, and to complete projects on time.
- Ability to provide status updates to management through clear verbal and written communication.
- Proficient interpersonal skills necessary to interact with a diverse set of scientists, engineers, and other technical and administrative staff within a respectful, collaborative research environment.

Position Information
This is a Flexible Term appointment, which is for a definite period not to exceed six years. If final candidate is a Career Indefinite employee, Career Indefinite status may be maintained (should funding allow).

Security Clearance
This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance. If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter.
