Description
The City of St. Augustine is looking to fill police officer positions with those certified in law enforcement or those who want to begin a career in law enforcement by going through the law enforcement academy (sponsorships may be available).
Performs general duty police work in the protection of life and property through the enforcement of laws and ordinances; does related work as required. General duty police work consisting of routine patrol work in an assigned area, preliminary investigation, and miscellaneous duties incidental thereto performed in accordance with departmental rules and regulations. A senior officer regularly checks the work and gives specific instructions and assistance when special problems arise, although a police officer is required to exercise initiative and discretion when faced with emergency conditions. The work involves an element of personal danger. A police officer may be assigned to make plainclothes investigations.
Examples of Duties
- Shall be responsible for becoming acquainted with all directives and other information posted on the official Department bulletin board, e-mail, or any other authorized device.
- Patrols an assigned area during a specific time period in motorized police equipment, bicycle, or by foot as directed by competent authority.
- Shall respond to calls promptly and safely. Shall immediately notify the shift commander of any unusual/serious incident or major crime that is brought to their attention.
- Shall investigate all crimes that occur in his/her assigned area, and shall investigate traffic accidents when assigned. Completes necessary reports as required by Department directives.
- Enforces the laws and ordinances of the City of St. Augustine and the laws of the State of Florida. Enforces traffic and parking regulations when not otherwise engaged in complaint activity.
- Maintains acceptable levels of productivity as set forth by competent authority, bank robbery prevention talks, Stranger Danger programs, and residential security.
- Checks doors and windows and examines premises of unoccupied buildings or residences in order to detect any suspicious conditions.
- Maintains crowd control at parades, funerals, or other public gatherings to ensure public safety.
- Collects evidence and photographs relating to major accidents and crime scenes. Turns all evidence and photographs in to the Evidence Room for processing.
- Shall see that their patrol vehicle contains all required equipment and reports necessary vehicle maintenance to the shift commander.
- Shall perform such other duties and have such other responsibilities as may be directed by competent authority.
Education and Experience
Good social and general intelligence; ability to understand and carry out complex oral and written instructions; good knowledge of first-aid methods; good judgment; ability to drive an automobile or motorcycle; skill in the use of firearms; good powers of observation and memory; physical strength and agility; excellent physical condition.
High school diploma required.
Driver's License Requirement: Valid Florida Driver's License Classification E .

Physical Demands
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The employee is regularly required to effectively communicate and exchange information with others, think critically, and solve problems during physical exertion and stressful situations. This position is sedentary while in a patrol vehicle but can be very active and requires the agility and physical strength to work under adverse conditions, including standing, walking, bending, lifting, pulling, kneeling, climbing, and crouching for periods of time. The employee must lift or move items or individuals weighing more than 100 pounds; push and pull objects up to 125 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, ability to adjust focus, and see various colors including red and green. The position requires good manual dexterity (hand, hand with arm, two hands) and multi-limb coordination.
