Southeastern Minnesota Youth Orchestras (SEMYO) of Rochester, MN invites qualified candidates who enjoy working with youth to apply for the part-time position of Program Associate.
Job Summary
The Program Associate will work closely with the artistic team to help coordinate operations for all SEMYO programs while maintaining positive relationships with participants, family members, and community partners. This includes pre-planning and on-site coordination for youth orchestra rehearsals, outreach programs, performances, and special activities. The Program Associate is responsible for creating a welcoming and safe environment for youth in grades 3-12 to learn instrumental music. The position is part-time but there may be opportunities for growth or additional hours depending on the candidate’s skill set and available funding.
Duties
- In cooperation with the Executive and Program Director and artistic staff, plan rehearsals, tours, and other activities.
- Reserve rehearsal and performance venues and work closely with venue staff to ensure compliance and proper relations.
- Coordinate guest teachers and coaches.
- Setup and clean-up rehearsal rooms and ensure conductors and guest coaches have all needed equipment.
- Coordinate the transport and use of equipment including but not limited to musical instruments, large percussion equipment, music stands, chairs, and rehearsal supplies.
- Coordinate student traffic and relay verbal instructions to participants.
- Handout supplies as needed and coordinate with the music librarian to handout sheet music.
- Provide on-site coordination and support at special events such as orchestra tours, annual concerto competition, annual honor band event, and orchestra social gatherings.
- Recruit and manage volunteers to help at rehearsals and events.
- Monitor student attendance and enforce attendance policy.
Qualifications
Candidates must have a bachelor’s degree in music education, business, performance, or related field. In lieu of a music degree the Program Associate must have a bachelor’s degree and at least three years’ volunteer or paid experience working in the performing arts, education, or youth programming. Candidates must be highly organized, be able to work independently without direction, and have strong written and verbal communication skills.
Hours
- 15 Hours Per Week from September to June (hours may vary during July and August)
- Saturday mornings (~8:30 AM to 12:30 PM) from September to May required
- Attendance at three for four Sunday afternoon performances required
- Additional work hours are flexible and may be done remotely
About SEMYO
Southeastern Minnesota Youth Orchestras is a non-profit, 501c3 organization dedicated to the artistic and personal development of young musicians. SEMYO realizes its mission through a rigorous music education program that includes five youth orchestras, chamber music program, annual honor band event, and summer music camp. SEMYO has a core membership of 260 students and reaches hundreds of additional youth through its outreach programs and concert performances.
