Paducah & Louisville Railway, Inc. (part of P&L Transportation, Inc.) is looking for a Railroad Freight Car Repair in Paducah, KY.
This position is responsible for the inspections, repair and maintenance of all freight cars and related equipment in accordance with FRA, AAR, and Company rules, policies and regulations. All necessary safety procedures, guidelines and policies must be adhered to in the performance of the tasks assigned to this position as set forth below.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Performs all inbound and outbound inspections of railcars according to FRA and AAR regulations and established company procedures.
Performs initial terminal airbrake tests on railcars as required by FRA, AAR and Company rules and regulations.
Applies doors to freight cars when required to do so.
Stencils letter and numbers on railcars.
Fastens required parts to rail cars through the utilization of the appropriate tool(s).
Removes, repairs, or replaces parts on trucks of rail cars as required.
Removes and replaces brake assemblies and brake shoes on rail cars as required.
Removes and replaces uncoupling levers on rail cars as required.
Repairs or removes and replaces steel sections of rail cars such as side posts, panels, and piping as required.
Replaces and/or repairs gaskets, air hoses, train lines and other parts on rail cars.
Replaces or repairs grab irons, handholds and sill steps on rail cars.
Replaces repairs or maintains air brake pipes, valves, fittings and other appurtenances on rail cars.
Removes and replaces couplers, draft gears and yokes on rail cars as required.
Repairs freight car sides and doors on rail cars by straightening or patching.
Performs emergency repairs and other assigned work associated with derailments as directed.
Re-rails locomotives and rail cars by installing re-railers to the rail and slewing freight car or locomotive trucks.
Fabricates replacement parts for rail car repairs.
Performs rail car inspections to assess necessary repairs.
Performs Preventive maintenance on rail cars and equipment to assure they are functioning properly.
Signals crew members for movement of the locomotive engine or train, using a radio, to indicate when to stop, start, back up or set and release air brakes while performing an initial air brake terminal test or during a train derailment.
Signal locomotive engineer using a radio or hand signals at a train derailment.
Provide flag protection at train derailments
Clean and maintain assigned work area in accordance with all Company polices and procedure.

- Required to work either day or night shifts as assigned on repair track or in the train yard.
- Must be able to operate, to the satisfaction of supervision, and in accordance with all safe and required operating procedures, the following equipment:
- Electric Hoists.
- Mechanical, electrical and pneumatic jacking and lifting devices.
- Power tools.
- Hand tools.
- Electric, hydraulic and pneumatic drills, impact wrenches and grinders.
- Acetylene torches.
- Clamps, vises, workbenches, stands and fixtures.
- Read, interpret and apply rulers, scales, tape measures, height sticks, hand levels and gauges.
- Forklifts, crane trucks, electric hand trucks, and scooters
- Electric and gas welding equipment.
- Automobiles and light trucks.
- Understand, comprehend and follow all FRA, AAR and Company Safety rules, policies, regulations and procedures.
Valid Drivers License and CDL if required

Education/Experience:
High school diploma or general education degree (GED); and knowledge and proficiency of overhead cranes, electric hoists, mechanical, electrical and pneumatic jacking and lifting devices, power tools, hand tools electric, hydraulic and pneumatic drills, impact wrenches and grinders, acetylene torches, clamps, vises, workbenches, stands and fixtures. Reading, interpreting and applying rulers, scales, tape measures, height sticks, hand levels and gauges. Safe and proficient operation of forklifts, crane trucks, electric hand trucks, scooters and electric hoists, electric and gas welding equipment, automobiles and light trucks.
Certification and proficiency in gas and electric welding are required as well as safe operation of this and all and any other equipment.
Language Ability:
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence Ability to communicate clearly, concisely and safely with co-workers, and supervisors. Ability to comprehend instructions and tasks and provide co-workers and supervisors with appropriate feed back on assigned job duties and responsibilities.
Math Ability:
Ability to calculate figures and amounts and perform basic math.
Reasoning Ability:
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several variables in a variety of situations. Ability to logically interpret instructions and equipment and apply them independently to job responsibilities.
