Summary:
The San Diego Union-Tribune is seeking a reporter to cover South County, which includes San Diego County's second-largest city, Chula Vista, and its neighbors, National City and Imperial Beach. These coastal cities are shaped by a growing tourism industry, a decades-long sewage crisis that originates across the border in Tijuana, Mexico, and air pollution created by operations at the Port of San Diego. We are looking for a versatile journalist who will immerse themselves in city government and become well-versed in the issues important to each city and the region at large. The successful candidate must be able to juggle aggressive beat work and breaking news while occasionally bringing an enterprise approach to the beat, focusing on deeply reported, high-impact journalism.
What you will do:
- Provide impactful enterprise stories and daily news reports for prominent display in print and on digital platforms
- Build a network of sources
- Versatility is a must, as stories will cover a variety of topics
- Write on deadline in a fast-paced environment; speed and accuracy are critical
- Pitch story ideas on a regular basis
- Maintain communication with a supervising editor
- Understand and use company-provided hardware, software and cloud-based equipment and systems for company business and tasks
- Contribute to a positive culture of teamwork and collaboration
- Pitch in on some weekend/holiday metro reporting shifts
What you will bring:
- A minimum of two years of journalism experience and degree or equivalent
- Ability to simplify complex subjects in a clear, engaging way
- Command of various journalistic writing forms, including narrative and explanatory, with solid news judgment and fluency in style
- Ability to work cooperatively and adaptively in a team setting
- Proven ability to juggle multiple tasks in a deadline-driven environment
- Commitment to the fundamentals of journalism: Fairness, accuracy, accessibility
- Strong interpersonal, critical-thinking and problem-solving skills and an ability to work with people at all levels and across departments and divisions
- The skill to mine human sources, documents and data
- Fluency in Spanish preferred
Benefits and Compensation:
The hourly range is $28.85 - $31.73. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to geographic location, education, work experience, time in role, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, the Company offers eligible employees a variety of benefits including medical, dental, life and disability insurance, 401k, as well as paid time off and select paid holidays (all benefits are based on eligibility).
