We’re building a mission-driven team of accomplished and kind individuals who embrace our startup culture of rapid iteration, transparency, and versatility.
We’re hiring a Research Associate for the wet-lab portion of our hybrid Applied AI team. Our team merges cutting-edge AI/ML models with traditional and emerging wet lab methodologies to accelerate scientific discovery towards longevity therapeutics. In this role, you will be part of the wet lab. You’ll use your skills in cell culture and molecular biology to increase our wet lab bandwidth, both helping to run our current platforms and contributing to setting up new ones.
About you:You’re eager to spend ~two years deeply engaged in hands-on science and to build the foundation for your future career as a scientist — whether that leads to pursuing a PhD (at Retro or outside) or another path. You have a diverse skillset and are eager to learn new techniques/technologies as needed. You approach your work with the ability to prioritize, allowing for efficient completion of tasks. You enjoy hands-on work and value being organized, executing experiments, and paying attention to the details. You’re a highly collaborative team member with a “can-do” attitude and great communication skills. You are motivated to solve aging and excited by the prospect of integrating AI/ML models with high throughput experiments to tackle it.
In this role, you will:
- Perform regular culture of mammalian cells, mainly primary cells and cell lines using aseptic tissue culture techniques.
- Produce and assist with production/amplification of DNA and protein. Perform viral packaging of DNA.
- Assist with AI-driven screens of protein variants (including protein production, DNA amplification, viral packaging, large scale aseptic cell culture, etc). Perform cell-based and molecular assays to read out.
- Assist in processing mouse tissues and performing immunohistochemistry (IHC) and histological stains.
- Collaborate with computational applied AI members as well as with other teams at Retro.
- Maintain an electronic lab notebook and contribute to supporting documents.
- Ensure we have all reagents we need: maintain stocks, aliquoting cytokines, tracking usage and delivery.
You might thrive in this role if you:
- Have a BS degree (biology, bioengineering, or a related field).
- Are able to learn/uptake information quickly and follow established protocols.
- Have experience with standard tissue culture and mouse tissue processing techniques.
- Find joy in helping others and working with people with different technical backgrounds.
- Have excellent time management and prioritization skills.
- Are highly organized, energetic, detail-oriented, intellectually curious, ambitious, and deeply pragmatic.
- Thrive in a culture that embraces rapid iteration and open, straightforward and direct communication.
It’s a bonus if you:
- Have experience with gene delivery (transfection & transduction), protein production, and/or high-throughput screening.
- Have experience with gene, cell, and protein characterisation techniques (eg FACS/flow cytometry, IF/microscopy, ELISA, SDS PAGE & Western blot, qRT-PCR.
- Have experience cloning.
- Have experience with library prep and sequencing (ONT and NGS).
- Have experience with cryosectioning & IHC/histological stains, dissections & tissue dissociations, etc.
