This position is based at the Gateway Institute for Research offices and laboratory in the Center for Collaborative Research on the Nova Southeastern University campus in Davie, FL and is an onsite work environment.
Hourly Range: $26-$31 per hour depending on level of experience
Gateway Institute for Brain Research is an international cutting-edge clinical-stage research center dedicated to improving the quality of life for those diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease, and other neurological conditions. The mission of Gateway Institute for Brain Research is to cure Parkinson’s Disease. We approach this mission through a combination of in-house research, private sponsorship, and inter-institutional collaboration with the goals of expediting the development of novel treatments and fostering scientific understanding.
Position Description:
Gateway is seeking a highly organized and detail-oriented Research Technician to ensure the smooth and efficient day-to-day operations of our laboratory. The Research Technician will be responsible for managing laboratory resources, maintaining equipment, overseeing inventory, and helping the researchers with various tasks. The ideal candidate for this position will possess strong problem-solving abilities, be an excellent communicator, and be adept at both independent work and collaborative efforts within a fast-paced team environment.
The work within the laboratories at Gateway include the use of different types of equipment, including, but not limited to, biosafety cabinets, microscopes, incubators, cryostorage units, ultra-low freezers, refrigerators, balances, sonicators, centrifuges, and pipettors. The Research Technician position entails the upkeep and maintenance of all equipment. The Research Technician is responsible for scheduling routine maintenance, as well as diagnosing and troubleshooting any equipment malfunctions that may occur.
Another aspect of the position include maintaining a detailed inventory of equipment, supplies, and samples within the laboratories. This entails weekly ordering of any reagents or supplies required for the scientists working in the lab. The Research Technician works closely with research scientists to prevent project interruptions due to ordering issues or equipment malfunctions.
Additionally, the role provides lab work support by assisting researchers with the preparation of experiments. Responsibilities will involve preparing reagents, such as small molecule aliquots that are required for experiments, and preparing media or diluting reagents, printing labels for sample collection.
Job Responsibilities:
- Laboratory Maintenance and Organization:
- Oversee the general cleanliness and organization of laboratory spaces, including benches, equipment rooms, and storage areas.
- Coordinate and schedule routine maintenance and repairs for laboratory equipment, working with internal teams and external vendors.
- Maintain accurate records of equipment maintenance, calibration, and service.
- Ensure proper functioning of essential lab utilities (e.g., water, gas, vacuum).
- Autoclaving water, tubes, and metal tools.
- Inventory and Procurement:
- Manage laboratory supply inventory, including chemicals, reagents, consumables, and glassware.
- Monitor stock levels and proactively initiate purchase requests to avoid shortages.
- Maintain accurate inventory records and ensure proper storage of materials.
- Evaluate and identify potential new suppliers and negotiate pricing as needed.
- Safety and Compliance:
- Manage the proper disposal of chemical and biological waste according to established protocols.
- Maintain safety data sheets (SDS) and ensure they are readily accessible, update the chemical inventory.
- Participate in safety audits and inspections.
- Lab Work Support:
- Assist researchers and lab personnel with the preparation of experiments, including setting up equipment and preparing reagents.
- Perform basic laboratory techniques and procedures as directed.
- Assist with data collection and organization.
Qualifications:
- Minimum Qualification: A.S. or B.S. degree in biology, microbiology, molecular biology, biochemistry, or biomedical engineering
- 1+ years of laboratory experience in the field of cellular biology, biotechnology, pharmacology/pharmaceutics and/ or related research experience
- Experience creating and updating laboratory inventories
- Ability to learn new techniques
- Ability to give and follow written and oral instructions and to communicate effectively
