DESCRIPTION OF POSITION:
Responsible for direction of client care in the behavioral health care setting. Consults with staff, physicians and Chief Nursing Officer on nursing problems and interpretation of facility policies to ensure client needs are met. Provides nursing care through physical and mental assessments, laboratory testing, treatment plans and therapeutic treatments. Knowledgeable of a wide range of disorders; cognitive, emotional, developmental, social and behavioral. Performs crisis intervention. Maintains performance improvement activities within the department and participates in CQI activities.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Create and monitors goals and objectives for facility that are measurable and based on current evidenced based practice in Behavioral Health treatment
- Assures compliance of nursing practice and procedure with standards of practice and regulatory bodies guidelines.
- Ability to teach principles and practical application of infection control to all levels of healthcare personnel.
- Monitors and adjusts staffing patterns based on patient care requirements and department needs consistent with productivity measures.
- Investigates infections, especially those occurring above established thresholds, and/or in clusters by client units.
- Confers with staff nurses on all patient units on a regular basis to determine occurrence of nosocomial infections.
- Performs management activities including interviewing, hiring, disciplinary actions and terminating
- Ability to develop infection control policies and procedures.
- Monitors staff performance and provides coaching and formal counseling to staff as needed.
- Conducts annual performance reviews in a timely fashion
- Confers with medical and nursing staff to determine appropriate implementation of isolation precautions
- Role models excellence in customer service when dealing with patients and families.
- Ability to perform nursing assessments on all clients and reassessments as per policy.
- Conducts infection control rounds on all units every month.
- Ability to adequately assess and reassess pain. Utilizes appropriate pain management techniques. Educates the client and family regarding pain management.
- Performs thorough client psychiatric interviews.
- Continuously observes client's behavior, mental status and activities.
- Formulates and implements client treatment plans; family is included when appropriate.
- Ability to revise treatment plans as indicated by the client's response to treatment and evaluates overall plan daily for effectiveness
- Knowledgeable of medications including psychotropic drugs and their correct administration based on the age of the client and their clinical condition.
- Communicates appropriately and clearly to the CNO, Administration, staff and physicians.
Minimum Requirements:
Education and Licensing:
- Associate of Science Degree in Nursing, Bachelor’s degree preferred.
- Current CA RN License
- Current Basic Life Support certification upon hire and maintain current.
- Management of Assaultive Behavior within 30 days of employment and maintain current.
Knowledge and Experience:
- A minimum of five (5) years’ experience in a behavioral health care setting, management experience preferred.
- Child and Adolescent behavioral health care experience strongly preferred
Skills and Abilities:
- Demonstrates the ability to perform crisis intervention and triage.
- Facilitates Abuse Reports when indicated.
- Communicates appropriate reports to PI and QA committees.
- Demonstrates comprehensive knowledge of complete infection control process in the healthcare setting
- Documentation meets current standards and policies
- Stays abreast of changing infection control practices and presents plan for compliance in a timely manner.
- Maintains a safe environment for staff, clients/families and visitors.
- Develops and implements a system for identifying, investigating, reporting and preventing the spread of nosocomial infections among patients of all ages and healthcare personnel.
- Ability to conduct thorough and timely investigations of youth and/or employee incidents.
- Concurs with members of the treatment team for the benefit of the client.
- Functions as a client and family advocate at all times.
- Demonstrates knowledge of risk stratified statistics as applicable to trending nosocomial infections.
- Effectively communicates with facility physicians, and escalates concerns to Medical Director as needed
- Demonstrates the ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations.
- Continuously supervises staff to ensure quality of nursing care.
- Reviews and submits for approval revisions to the Infection Control Manual policies and procedures on an annual basis.
- Provides education to staff on performance improvement. Ability to plan and organize orientation and in-service training for unit staff members, participates in guidance and educational programs.
- Responsible for checking and submitting weekly payroll time records for accuracy and submitting to payroll department in timely manner.
- Completes monthly and quarterly chart audits, PI reports and administrative reports as required
- Performs management activities including interviewing, hiring, disciplinary actions and terminating.
Physical Requirements:
While performing the duties of this job, this position is frequently required to do the following:
- Use standard office equipment and access, input, and retrieve information from a computer. Use computer keyboard with manual and finger dexterity and wrist-finger speed sufficient to perform repetitive actions efficiently for extended periods of time.
- Communicate effectively in person or via telephone in a manner which can be understood by those with whom the person is speaking, including a diverse population.
- Give and follow verbal and written instructions with attention to detail and accuracy.
- Perform complex mental functions and basic arithmetic functions; interpret complex laws, regulations, and policies; collect, interpret, and/or analyze complex data and information.
