Under the general supervision of the Crew Leader, the Street Technician performs maintenance of streets, right-a-ways, creeks, drainage channels, and other City property, including street repair, street signage repair and replacement, street marking, cleaning, and removing debris. Requires on-call work, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and overtime as needed. May work with other divisions of Public Works in cross-training exercises.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Operate concrete saws, portable concrete mixers, air compressors, pneumatic drills and tampers, hand tools and gas power trimmers, chainsaws, track loaders, mowers, trucks, street sweepers, backhoes, pump trucks, and dump trucks;
- Compact base course materials, saw cut area, install concrete forms, remove forms, mix concrete for repair, patch potholes with asphalt, and seal cracks;
- Install and repair street signs;
- Performs street maintenance and repair work in both asphalt and concrete mediums;
- Performs installation, maintenance, and repair tasks on various structures, i.e., sidewalks, driveways, street signs, and drainage pipes;
- Prepares for pouring concrete and laying asphalt, to include mixing by hand where applicable;
- Mow, trim, and use chainsaws and other equipment as required to clear rights-of-way and other City properties and remove branches that obstruct the line of sight for street signs;
- Inspects and Maintains fuel, stock, vehicle fluids, clean vehicles, equipment, and tools to ensure proper working condition;
- Prepares assigned equipment for safe and efficient operating conditions by inspecting before and after use; maintains fuel, stock, and clean vehicles and equipment and tools to ensure proper working conditions;
- Participates in traffic control activities and maintains barricades (including lights), traffic cones, and other safety equipment;
- Keep streets and drainage areas clear of debris during emergencies, including after hours;
- Required to ensure all work areas are clean and clear of debris and trash, install grass or sod where applicable;
- Load and unload various materials;
- Performs minor carpentry, painting, welding, and plumbing .

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
- High School diploma or GED;
- Must be 18 years or older;
- A valid Texas class C driver’s license is required with a good driving record;
- No experience is required as we will train you; Valid Commercial Driver’s license or ability to obtain within 12 months of employment.
DESIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE
- Concrete, paving, or finishing experience;
- Six months related experience in the construction trades;
- Experience and knowledge of basic construction methods and a wide variety of equipment used in the construction or repair of streets, street signs, and drainage systems;
- Experience and knowledge of various basic equipment safety and operation standards and procedures.
- Erosion control/pollution control knowledge or certification;
- CDL;
- Bilingual;
- Prior city/government experience.
NOTE
Any work-related experience resulting in acceptable and proven proficiency levels in the above-required knowledge, skills, abilities, education, training, or licensing could be considered as a possible substitute for the above industry-specified training or experience requirements for this position.
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Very heavy work. Exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects;
- Ability to work inside and outside, exposure to varying weather conditions (extreme heat, cold, temperature swings, rain, etc.), exposure to the sun, exposure to moving objects, operating assigned vehicles, movement on uneven terrain and city areas;
