The Livestock Units are seeking a dedicated Live-in Student Assistant to become an integral part of our team! This year-round position offers an unparalleled opportunity to gain practical skills, contribute to the daily operations of a working livestock facility, and develop valuable expertise.


ABOUT US: As the largest employer of students on the Cal Poly Pomona campus, the Enterprises offers valuable work experience and hands-on training to approximately 1,500 Cal Poly Pomona students each year. The Enterprises offers positions in various fields; whether it is in the area of technology, science, retail, culinary arts, hospitality1500 management, leadership or research grants, these student employees participate in Cal Poly Pomona's learn-by-doing philosophy and acquire practical skills in their designated field of study.

The Enterprises also contributes operating support to nearly 1,100 Enterprises and scholarship programs every year, including Bronco Athletics and the Pepsi Scholarship. In addition, the Enterprises administers grants and contracts, contributes to campus security, and supports several university publications. The Enterprises contributes over $1 million annually to Cal Poly Pomona.

Key Responsibilities:

As a Live-in Student Assistant, your duties will be essential to the well-being and productivity of our livestock units. These responsibilities include, but are not limited to:


  • Daily Animal Care & Monitoring:
    • Performing AM and PM feeding routines for various livestock (Cattle, Sheep, Goats, and Pigs), ensuring proper nutrition and intake.
    • Conducting thorough AM and PM health checks on all animals, identifying and reporting any signs of distress, illness, or injury.
    • Assisting with and performing doctoring and treatment of animals under supervision, gaining valuable veterinary support experience.
  • Livestock Movement & Handling:
    • Expertly moving and gathering animals within and between pens/pastures, utilizing safe and effective handling techniques.
    • Assisting with loading, unloading, and transportation of livestock as needed.
  • Facility Maintenance & Operations:
    • Upkeeping and repairing water troughs and fencing to ensure animal safety and facility integrity.
    • Maintaining cleanliness and sanitation of barns, pens, and surrounding areas, contributing to a healthy environment.
    • Operating heavy machinery (tractors, loaders, etc.) for various tasks such as feed delivery, waste removal, and field work.
    • Performing general custodial duties on weekends to maintain unit standards.
  • Active Participation & Learning:
    • Engaging in on-the-job training for all tasks and procedures, rapidly expanding your knowledge base.
    • Responding to on-call duties as scheduled, demonstrating reliability and commitment.
    • Assisting with other tasks as assigned by unit management, embracing a versatile role within the team.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

This role demands a self-motivated, responsible, and diligent individual with a strong work ethic. A proactive approach to animal welfare and a strong sense of responsibility are paramount. Qualified candidates will also meet the following:

  • Academic Standing: Must be a full-time student with good academic standing.
  • Licensing: Possess a valid driver's license.
  • Physical Aptitude: Ability to lift 80-100 pounds repeatedly and perform physically demanding tasks in various weather conditions.
  • Availability:
    • Availability to live on campus in provided housing.
    • Commitment to a year-round position, including work during summers, weekends, and holidays.
    • Ability to be on call on scheduled days.
  • Preferred Skills (but not required – we'll train you!):
    • Prior knowledge of livestock care and handling.
    • Experience with or ability to learn to drive heavy machinery.
