Classification: $13.94/hour without CDL OR $17.61/hour with a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), class B or C, with an “S” and “P” endorsement.

Role Overview
As a Substitute Bus Professional, you have a crucial role in ensuring that children safely travel to and from their Head Start center. Additionally, you will create a positive and secure experience for children and their families, while supporting their access to a high-quality preschool program.
Key Responsibilities
- Safety and Compliance: Ensure the safety of children at all times by utilizing active supervision strategies and adhering to policies and procedures.
- Substitute Bus Professional w/CDL: Safely operate the bus, following all traffic laws and regulations. Conduct pre and post trip inspections of the bus to confirm the bus is in good working condition.
Assistance with Loading/Unloading: Help children get on and off the bus safely and assist with buckling/unbuckling seatbelts.
- Behavior Management: Monitor children's behavior during transport to promote a safe and respectful environment, use positive redirection strategies when necessary.
- Education: Provide activities on the bus such as playing games, singing songs, and reading books to the children, and engage in appropriate conversations.
- Communication: Keep clear lines of communication with parents/guardians regarding transportation schedules and any issues that may arise.
- Emergency Preparedness: Be familiar with emergency procedures to respond effectively in case of an emergency.
- Record Keeping: Maintain accurate child information paperwork, attendance records, route sheets, and pre/post trip certifications, and report accidents/incidents in a timely manner.
- Collaboration: Work professionally with staff, parents/guardians, and community partners to ensure smooth operations and address any concerns.
- Professional Development: Actively participate in professional development and training opportunities, ensuring compliance with regulations.

Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED.
- Experience working with young children.
- Ability to physically assist children, which may include carrying children to and from the bus in case of an emergency.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
- A criminal records background check, including fingerprint checks.
- A valid Michigan driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record.
Substitute Bus Professional w/CDL
- Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), class B or C, with an “S” and “P” endorsement.
- Completion of the Michigan School Bus Driver Safety Education Course and Continuation Education Courses (CEUs)
- Department of Transportation (DOT) Physical, including drug/alcohol testing.
