TITLE: TECHNICAL ASSISTANT - PATHOLOGY

JOB OVERVIEW: Performs all paperwork, technical, and non-technical procedures required to process specimens. Assist in the set-up and clean-up for autopsies. Stock supplies; perform limited routine QC/maintenance procedures and other support duties as assigned.
AREA OF ASSIGNMENT: Pathology Department
HOURS OF WORK: As assigned, Primarily Monday - Friday
May require weekends
RESPONSIBLE TO: Laboratory Manager
PREREQUISITES:
Associate Degree in chemistry or biological sciences or high school graduate with minimum one year experience in a laboratory, Pathology preferred.
Basic Data entry, computer skills.
Basic Medical Terminology and or anatomy
Ability to type 40 wpm.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Demonstrates effective interpersonal and communication skills in a diverse population.
Demonstrates ability to prioritize workload and assist co-workers as needed to meet established turn around times.
Demonstrates ability to maintain and convey a positive team concept.
Able to work and handle visually offensive materials.
Knowledge of reagent storage and stability.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES

B.Unique Job Functions:
Process Pathology specimens according to established protocols for confirming patient identity, labeling and transport of specimens.
Accessions (enters) pathology cases into the Computer system.
Process outside specimens and requisitions according to established standards.
Performs clerical duties such as answering phones, distribution of reports and billing functions according to established protocols.
Process specimens for send out to reference laboratory.
Prepares tissue cassettes.
Performs limited testing according to established protocols.
Prepares reagents according to established procedures.
Assist with preparing the body for autopsies.
Prepares necessary equipment and set up for autopsies in the morgue.
Cleans and disinfects the gross room and morgue.
Properly disposes of specimens according to established standards.
Performs and documents maintenance on equipment according to established protocols.
Place supplies and reagent orders as needed to keep department adequately stocked.
Reviews logs, worksheets and resolves problems.
