The Washington State School for the Blind (WSSB) is a school with a purpose to empower blind and low vision individuals to reach their full potential. Our programs and services are provided across a diverse continuum of service options; including a range of short and long-term programs that include residential options at our Vancouver campus, outreach services in local schools and communities, access to specialized technology and resources through our Ogden Resource Center, as well as training options for parents, educators, and related service providers through a combination of department efforts. Duties

The Temporary Braille Production Assistant (Communication Consultant I) reports to the Ogden Resource Center Director and must interact with the Braille Program Specialist on a daily basis to accomplish the task of braille production.

Duties include but are not limited to the following...

Braille Production:

  • Braille production including embossing files, thermoforming tactiles, collating and binding. Completes quality control checks. Prepares projects for shipping by boxing, adhering labels, and delivering to the warehouse.
  • Keeps braille workroom clean and organized.
Check Braillers and Non-Visual Equipment:
  • Check braillers and write notes for repair.
  • Check non-visual electronic equipment and write notes for repair.
Brailler Maintenance:
  • Clean and repair braillers.
Other Duties:
  • Assists in the warehouse as needed.
  • Assist customers as needed.
  • Shipping and receiving.

Qualifications

Requirements:

  • Braille competency sufficient to do braille production unassisted.
  • Must be able to pass the WA UEB exam (strong reading/writing skills therefore are essential).
  • Strong communication skills, ability to work others and take direction.

Preferred/Desired Qualifications:
  • Advanced ability to read print and braille.

Note: The full salary range has been posted for informational purposes only. Typically, new hires do not start at the top of the range without State of Washington experience in a similarly situated position as these are considered longevity steps. This position may be eligible for Dual Language Pay, a premium of 5% which is added to an employee's base salary for recognized specialized skills (i.e. braille certification, foreign language fluency, etc.) that exceed the ordinary requirements for the position. Additionally, this recruitment may be used to fill multiple positions and shifts.
