Rivers Health is looking for a Temporary Director of Med/Surg to perform the following duties:
JOB SUMMARY:
Develops, implements, coordinates and manages all aspects of the
Medical-Surgical Units. Interfaces and coordinates all aspects
of care concerns between the clinical staff and physicians. Participates in quality improvement and evaluation processes related to the
Medical-Surgical Units. Responsible for reviewing and maintaining the
cost effectiveness in the provision of the Medical-Surgical Units.
On-going accountability for unit's staffing to maintain patient safety
levels.

Positions directly supervised: RN'S, LPN'S, Nursing Assistants, and
Unit Secretaries, Nurse Supervisor's
and Activity Director
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
The following is a summary of the major essential functions of this job.
The incumbent may perform other duties, both major and minor, that are not mentioned below; and specific functions may change from time to time.
- Assumes responsibility and accountability for overall quality of
patient care on the Medical-Surgical Units as well as with the Nurse
Supervisors.
- Assumes responsibility and accountability for the financial
Management aspects of the Medical-Surgical Units/Nursing
Administration, including all Budgetary processes.
- Ensures patient care is assigned according to the proficiency level
of personnel.
- Ensures the Medical-Surgical Units is organized for maximum
efficiency and quality control standards are maintained.
- Ensures the provision of quality care by ensuring appropriate
equipment and tools are available, working and meet safety
standards.
- Assumes responsibility as an intra/inter departmental liaison for
staff and physicians.
- Ensures an emphasis is placed on customer service and relations and
provides an example for staff to follow.
- Provides continuous evaluation and counseling of employees.
- Provides a work environment conducive to open interactive dialogue.
- Ensures on-going communication with the Director of Nursing
and keeps the Risk Manager apprised of quality concerns, cost
effective care and risk management issues.
- Responsible for compliance with JCAHO standards, state standards and
other regulatory agency standards.
- Hires, supervises, counsels and terminates employees, as
appropriate, in with consultation with the Director of Nursing and
the Human Resources Department.
- Holds monthly meetings with the Medical-Surgical Staff/Nursing
Supervisors to inform staff of corporate goals, philosophies and
Informational bullets.
- Attends mandatory in-services.
- Performs other job related duties as assigned.
- Complies with Corporate and Departmental policies and procedures and
the Personnel Handbook.
- Keeps the C.N.O. fully informed of all significant
developments and events.
- Is consistently supportive of the hospital leadership and mission
and is a positive team member at all times.

- Fosters an atmosphere of teamwork and collaboration.
- Participates in quality improvement activities including serving on
quality improvement teams.
Requirements:
QUALIFICATIONS:
The following qualifications, or equivalents, are the minimum requirements necessary to perform the essential functions of this position.
EDUCATION AND FORMAL TRAINING:
Graduate of a school of nursing. Must hold current licensure in
West Virginia. Bachelor's degree in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
WORK EXPERIENCE:
A minimum of three (3) years' experience in an acute care setting. Previous management/supervisory experience preferred.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
Demonstrates the ability to communicate verbally and in writing,
coordinate, motivate and collaborate with others. Must be able to
effectively recognize the unique needs of patients of all ages, including
neonates, pediatrics, adolescents and geriatrics. Must maintain a current
and thorough knowledge of nursing service policies, procedures and
philosophies. Must be able to prioritize and delegate effectively. Must be able to judge and problem solve based on situational assessment. Must
possess good inductive and deductive reasoning skills.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must have stamina to work in an on-going stressful environment. Must
possess visual and auditory acuity and manual dexterity. Must be able to
walk and stand for extended periods of time and from different hospital
units to units. Must be able to perform tasks, while using proper body
mechanics with the ability to lift, move and transfer patients. Must be
able to think quickly and perform multiple tasks.
