BRIEF POSITION SUMMARY
Performs advanced (senior-level) heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) mechanic work. Repairs, maintains and services base equipment and component parts in units such as heating, air conditioning, ventilating and power distribution systems. Performs general maintenance work in all areas of the building trades, such as plumbing, carpentry, painting, etc. Reports to the electrical mechanical supervisor and works under limited supervision, with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.
WORK HOURS: Tuesday – Friday, 10 hours a day, 40 hours a week
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Adheres to Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Air Force safety standards.
- Adheres to state and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) standards.
- Performs preventive maintenance on all HVAC equipment and follows maintenance schedule.
- Repairs and replaces broken parts on condensers, compressors and water and vacuum pumps.
- Tests refrigeration equipment for refrigerant leaks.
- Removes and installs motors, thermostats and humidistats.
- Checks gauges and performs preventive maintenance work.
- Maintains Direct Digital Control (DDC) equipment.
- Plans and oversees the installation of air conditioning and heating.
- Identifies mechanical problems and determines how to fix the problems.
- Troubleshoots malfunctions and repairs equipment.
- Troubleshoots and repairs low voltage electrical.
- Changes out inoperative air conditioning and heating equipment.
- Maintains and repairs buildings, utility systems, stationary equipment and boiler system.
- Monitors energy consumption of HVAC systems and makes recommendations for increased energy efficiency in operations.
- Sets up and installs complex HVAC electrical components.
- Orders materials and supplies and maintains records.
- Adheres to standby schedule and responds to emergency after hours calls.
- Attends work regularly and observes approved work hours in accordance with agency state employee policies & procedures handbook.
- May be required to perform duty in support of national emergencies, disasters and other missions, to include holidays and weekends.
- May occasionally work evenings, weekends or holidays.
- Performs related work as assigned.
Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION:
- Graduation from a standard senior high school or equivalent is required.
EXPERIENCE:
- Four (4) years of experience installing, repairing, and/or maintaining heating, ventilation, cooling, and refrigeration equipment/systems.
- Experience using Microsoft applications (such as Microsoft Word, Outlook and Excel) is required.
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:
- At least eighteen (18) months of experience in minor building maintenance is preferred.
REGISTRATION, CERTIFICATION OR LICENSURE:
- EPA Certification is required.
- HVAC Technician registration is required.
- Valid driver's license is required. *Texas Driver's License will be required within first 30 days of employment. Satisfactory driving records are required for driving state or personal vehicles to conduct agency business. Copy of DL must be furnished to HR upon employee orientation.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
- Background Investigation. Selected candidate must pass federal security background investigation. The process includes a National Agency Check and Inquiry (NACI) and fingerprinting. New employees must complete and sign the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Form SF85. Completed forms are submitted to the OPM for the background investigations.
- Eligibility to Work in the U.S. The Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 requires all new employees to present proof of eligibility to work in the United States within three (3) days of being hired. The Texas Military Department participates in E-Verify and will provide the Social Security Administration (SSA) and, if necessary, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), with information from each new employee's Form I-9 to confirm work authorization. All offers of employment are contingent upon the candidate having and maintaining legal authorization to work in the United States. Failure to present such authorization within the time specified by the U.S. Department of Labor will result in the offer being rescinded.
- Sponsorship. Candidates must be eligible to work in the United States without requiring sponsorship.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of:

PHYSICAL/WORKING CONDITIONS
Work involves standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, climbing and crawling. Work may be done in awkward and cramped positions. May be required to work and exposed to inclement weather. Frequently lifts, carries, moves, and sets up equipment and materials weighing up to 125 pounds. Travel may be required up to 20% of the time.
