BRIEF POSITION SUMMARY

Performs routine (journey-level) building maintenance and construction work. Work involves maintaining and repairing buildings, utility systems, and stationary equipment; and operating motorized equipment. Provides oversight and support for state approved technicians and contractors on the Texas ChalleNGe Academy (TCA) campus. This position reports directly to the TCA Staff Training Coordinator.  Works under moderate supervision, with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

WORK HOURS: 40 hours a week, some shift work, some weekends/holidays

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Performs property and facility maintenance functions to support (TCA).
  • Evaluates facility suitability and monitors safety.
  • Assists with the preparation of facility repair estimates.
  • Ensures the facility is fit for occupancy and plans for a clean, safe working environment.
  • Identifies current and future facility planning requirements.
  • Ensures compliance with federal, state and local accessibility facility requirements.
  • Develops and maintains Texas ChalleNGe Academy program records for facility operations and maintenance.
  • Performs moderate maintenance, construction, and repair work such as masonry, welding, carpentry, painting, plumbing, or mechanical work.
  • Performs preventive maintenance on equipment, tools, and buildings on a scheduled and as-needed basis.
  • Operates and maintains motorized vehicles and equipment.
  • Operates as the TCA Fleet Manager and will deliver vehicles to get serviced for preventive maintenance.
  • Works with State Asset Manager and Fleet Manager to ensure registration, inspection, repair, and toll adherence.
  • May perform inspections of operating machinery, equipment, and utility systems to ensure efficient and safe operations.
  • May assist with the preventative maintenance and repair of machinery, equipment, and utility systems.
  • May assist with plumbing; electrical; or heating, ventilation, and air conditioning work.
  • Maintains records on work orders or projects.
  • Maintains landscaping including mowing grass, edging walks and curbs, and trimming shrubbery. Operates the tractor for use in mowing, blading, and mosquito treatment of the facility grounds.
  • Works with procurement and logistics to ensure seamless operations for facility operations and fulfillment.
  • Assists with planning, scheduling, coordinating and recommending technical repairs and maintenance.
  • Provides and/or oversees routine housekeeping for administrative office complex.
  • Attends relevant training to maintain the essential functions of the position.
  • Performs administrative functions and other related duties as needed.
  • Attends work regularly and observe approved work hours in accordance with agency state employee policies and procedures handbook.
  • May be required to perform duty in support of national emergencies, disasters and other missions, to include holidays and weekends.
 

Qualifications

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION

EDUCATION:

  • Graduation from a standard senior high school or equivalent is required.

PREFERRED EDUCATION:

  • Supplemental vocational training in a designated trade is generally preferred.

EXPERIENCE:

  • One (1) year of experience in construction or building maintenance and repair work is required.
  • Experience using Microsoft applications to include Microsoft Word, Outlook and Excel is required.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience working with high school-aged youth preferred.
  • Military service experience preferred.

SUBSTITUTION:

  • Experience and vocational education may be substituted for one another.

 

REGISTRATION, CERTIFICATION OR LICENSURE:

  • First Aid and CPR certifications are required, or the ability to obtain such certification, and must be maintained throughout employment.
  • Valid driver’s license is required. *The ability to obtain a Texas Driver’s License will be required within first 30 days of employment. A satisfactory driving record is required for driving state or federal vehicles to conduct agency business.

 

OTHER REQUIREMENTS: 

  • This position is security sensitive, and employment is contingent upon favorable results of a criminal record check with the Texas Department of Public Safety.
  • Background Investigation. Selected candidate must pass a federal security background investigation and complete and submit the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Standard Form (SF) 86. The process includes a National Agency Check and Inquiry (NACI) and fingerprinting. Completed forms are submitted to the OPM for the background investigations.
  • Eligibility to Work in the U.S.  The Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 requires all new employees to present proof of eligibility to work in the United States within three (3) days of being hired. The Texas Military Department participates in E-Verify and will provide the Social Security Administration (SSA) and, if necessary, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), with information from each new employee's Form I-9 to confirm work authorization. All offers of employment are contingent upon the candidate having and maintaining legal authorization to work in the United States. Failure to present such authorization within the time specified by the U.S. Department of Labor will result in the offer being rescinded.
  • Sponsorship.  Candidates must be eligible to work in the United States without requiring sponsorship.

PHYSICAL/WORKING CONDITIONS

Work involves outdoor weather, standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, climbing and crawling. Frequently lifts, carries, moves and sets up equipment and materials that weigh up to 50 pounds. May occasionally require 10% travel.

NOTE: Texas ChalleNGe Academy is a smoke-free environment. Smoking and/or the use of tobacco is prohibited within the facility.
