Job Summary

Utah Reads employees tutor elementary school students who are reading below grade-level, working with the same children twice a week in 45-minute tutoring sessions. Tutors may also provide classroom help or assistance in after school programs.

We partner with six sites in the Salt Lake City School District:

  • Edison Elementary
  • Liberty Elementary
  • Mountain View Elementary
  • Newman Elementary
  • Nibley Park Elementary
  • Glendale-Mountain View Community Learning Center

The Lowell Bennion Center for Community Engagement at the University of Utah is an international leader in community engagement and public service. The Bennion Center inspires and mobilizes people to strengthen communities through learning, scholarship, and advocacy. Responsibilities

  • Attend required trainings and orientation: New tutors must attend orientation and two trainings with the University of Utah Reading Clinic. For Fall 2025, orientation and trainings will be on 8/22 and 9/5 in the afternoon. Tutors are also expected to attend any meetings held at their site.
  • Transportation: Tutors must provide their own transportation to and from their assigned school site.
  • Scheduling: Tutors set their own regular weekly schedules within the available tutoring hours of the partnering site. Tutors must commit to work at least 4 hours per week on at least 2 days of the week and cannot exceed 19 hours per week.
  • Consistency: Consistent, ongoing support is crucial for the community partners Utah Reads works with. Tutors are asked to commit to working with Utah Reads for at least one school year, unless they are graduating mid-year.
  • Community Partnership: Tutors are expected to comply with all of the rules of their assigned school site. Conduct guidelines may include site rules, dress code, safety procedures, etc.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma, or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience); demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills are required.
  • The incumbent will be required to pass a Bureau of Criminal Investigation ( BCI ) Background check
