Winchester Thurston School, an innovative Jr. Pre-Kindergarten through grade 12 independent day school in Pittsburgh, seeks a full-time Upper School Science Teacher, who will instruct and supervise students in Grades 9 through 12. The individual in this position will work closely with the Director of Upper School, the Science Department Chair, and other faculty members, students, and parents. The Upper School Science Teacher performs under the general direction of the Head of School and the daily supervision of the Director of Upper School.
Responsibilities
● Teach 4 sections of science, including biology and chemistry
● Manage the curriculum and classroom environment with an emphasis on developmentally appropriate practices, safety, and well-being while monitoring and encouraging student participation and effort during activities
● Collaborate with other Science department members to design and execute lessons, learning experiences, and assessments using an interdisciplinary approach that is in accord with divisional curriculum and the school’s educational philosophy
● Work on curriculum revision and program development with other teachers in the department, the Director of Upper School, and the Director of Academics
● Evaluate student performance, knowledge, and skills through regular assessments and demonstrations
● Complete student assessment reports (e.g., report cards, interim comments, etc.) in accordance with school guidelines and the deadlines established by each Division
● Work as a team member with teaching colleagues and administrators by attending all school-wide meetings, department meetings, Upper School faculty meetings, and in-service days; serve on committees as needed
● Communicate and respond to families' questions and concerns in an effective and timely manner through a variety of means, including email, telephone, and student progress reports
● Demonstrate enthusiasm for and engagement in the school’s:
o City as Our Campus initiative, actively seeking meaningful community connections for experiential learning opportunities within and outside the classroom
o Commitment to equity and inclusion, including but not limited to, curriculum, teaching practice, and professional growth
o Strategic priorities through designing and implementing learning experiences that are interdisciplinary, student-centered, and/or project-based
● Commit to ongoing professional growth through personal and professional learning; engage in activities including but not limited to: participating in goal setting, upholding expectations in the professionalism checklist, engaging in the faculty growth system, participating and contributing to collaborative curricular and professional learning groups, etc.
● Participate in a mentoring program with an experienced faculty member during the first two years of employment
● Assist the admission process by meeting with prospective families, attending admission events, and helping screen prospective candidates for admission
● Serve as an active member of the School by engaging with colleagues, participating in events and activities, and fulfilling additional duties, including but not limited to, taking attendance, managing lunch and recess duties, chaperoning field trips, after-school events or grade-level trips, and other assignments
● Stay informed about current trends, best practices, and advancements in science education
● Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications
● Bachelor’s degree in science and/or education is required, along with experience teaching science; a Master’s degree is preferred
● Ability to create an interesting and differentiated learning environment to engage all students
● Educational philosophy consistent with that of the school
● Strong communication skills for working effectively with students, colleagues, and parents
