The City of Waco is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Utilities Project Coordinator Apprentice to join our team. This is a hands-on opportunity to gain experience supporting infrastructure projects.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • H.S. Diploma or GED required.
  • Texas Driver’s License required.
  • Familiarity reading legal documents, ProjectMates project software, GIS maps, and engineering plans and reports preferred.
  • Experience in project management preferred.
  • Working knowledge of utilities or public works, water and/or wastewater project experience preferred.

Position Description:

This position works in the Department of Infrastructure Services engineering team on various capital projects and infrastructure repairs. Under direct supervision, the Utilities Project Coordinator Apprentice is responsible for performing a variety of administrative, technical and communicative duties and will work closely with multiple engineers, project managers, and administrative staff.

Essential Functions:
  • Coordinates and assists the engineering team in overseeing certain aspects of assigned projects; monitors progress and provides regular project status reports. Obtains and provides needed data to appropriate parties to address issues beyond scope of duties.
  • Plans, organizes, and monitors project activities to ensure effective communication with Project Coordinator, Project Administrator, Project Manager, and contractors.
  • Acts as a liaison between contractors and department leadership; performs quality checks to ensure projects are on schedule and contractors are performing to City standards.
  • Assists and supports the development of project scope for numerous large and small scale projects; Coordinates and consults with the engineering team and other agencies involved in determining needs, preparation of specifications and cost estimates, work scheduling, and evaluation of results.
  • Gathers, complies, and applies information required for the completion of a project by utilizing available resources and assists in obtaining new ones when necessary.
  • Maintains project files, documents and records ; prepares reports on progress and performance.
  • Performs various administrative duties for engineering team professionals.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Complies with all policies and standards.
  • Supports the relationship between the City of Waco and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with residents, visitors, and City staff, maintains confidentiality of work-related issues and City information

The City has a strong Financial Management Policy that guides the operation and delivery of quality City services, contributes to excellent AA+ and Aa1 bond ratings, and maintains an unassigned fund balance reserve in the General Fund equal to 28% of current year budgeted expenditures. The City of Waco has more than 1,600 employees and a total operating budget of over $400 million.

The City provides a full range of municipal services including a regional airport, animal services, building inspections, code enforcement, convention and visitors bureau, emergency management, housing and community development, economic development, fire, public health, library, municipal court, parks and recreation, planning, police, public works, Texas Ranger Hall of Fame Museum, utilities and zoo operations.
