This position is assigned to the hospital's canteen or grill and its primary purpose is to train, instruct, demonstrate and provide assistance to patient workers in this setting. Provides guidance and support to patient workers in order to improve work skills and general work knowledge required to maintain employment in the community. Duties include completing and/or instructing patient workers in: following all safety and sanitation guidelines, stocking food items, cooking, serving food, cleaning, inspecting food items as well as the environment, receiving and accounting for deliveries, planning menus, assisting with cashier duties. This position provides positive person-centered interactions, communicates effectively, demonstrates willingness to help others and respect for patients and peers.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

  • General knowledge of food service (i.e. running a register, food preparation, cooking, and other related duties)
  • Demonstrated skills in working with others and effective communication
  • Working knowledge of running a cash register
  • Proficiency in training and instructing others

Management Preferences
Experience in a psychiatric setting; knowledge of community resources; experience with teaching adult education

Physical Requirements
Physical ability is necessary for participation in a variety of activities. Must be able to lift up to 50 to help with the truck and stock.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school or General Educational Development diploma; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Special Condition for Continued Employment As required, listing as a Nurse Aide I by the North Carolina Division of Health Service Regulation. As applicable, listing as a Nurse Aide II by the North Carolina Board of Nursing. As applicable, North Carolina Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification.

**Eligibility for Sign-on Bonus

Qualified applicants must be selected from the candidate pool of this posting and meet the State policy following requirements:

“A newly hired permanent full time or permanent part-time employee who works 30 to 40 hours per week is eligible for a sign-on bonus (this will be prorated for employees working less than 40 hours per week).

An employee is not eligible for a sign-on bonus if:

(1) the employee has held a position in North Carolina State government, including the judicial system, or the University of North Carolina system within the last 12 months (the employee shall remain ineligible for 12 months from the separation date);

(2) the employee has previously received a sign-on bonus from any State agency;

(3) or DHHS has paid any contract placement or recruitment fees.

This Sign-on Bonus is contingent upon budget and final eligibility determination as of the effective date of hire. Additional information regarding the Sign-on Policy can be found here.


NOTE: For temporary, contract or other supplemental staffing appointments: There are no paid leave, retirement or other benefits associated with these appointment types.
