Job description
Job Description: The Accounting Director leads all accounting operations for the company and owns the accuracy, timeliness and integrity of its financial records and reporting. The role directs the monthly and annual close, maintains internal controls, leads the external audit, oversees tax compliance and develops the accounting team. Reporting to the [CFO / VP of Finance], the Director advises executive leadership on the accounting impact of business decisions. Expectations:
Financial close and reporting
- Direct the monthly, quarterly and annual close.
- Prepare and review financial statements.
- Oversee the general ledger, journal entries, account reconciliations, accruals and fixed assets.
- Deliver monthly reporting packages and variance analysis to executive leadership.
Accounting operations
- Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll accounting, revenue recognition and inventory/cost accounting.
- Monitor cash position and cash flow and manage banking relationships.
- Manage [multi-entity consolidations and intercompany accounting].
Internal controls and compliance
- Design, document and maintain internal controls over financial reporting.
- Establish and enforce accounting policies and procedures.
- Research new accounting standards and lead their adoption.
- Ensure timely federal, state and local tax filings, working with external tax advisors.
Audit
- Lead the annual external audit and serve as the primary contact for auditors.
- Resolve audit findings and execute corrective actions.
Budgeting and business partnership
- Support the annual budget and periodic forecasts.
- Advise department leaders on the accounting treatment of contracts, transactions and new initiatives.
Systems and process improvement
- Own the accounting system and the integrity of its data.
- Identify and lead automation and process improvements that shorten the close and reduce errors.
Team leadership
- Hire, train and develop accounting staff.
- Set goals, assign work and evaluate performance.
- Build a culture of accuracy, accountability and continuous improvement.
Qualifications
Education- Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance or a related field.
- 5 years of progressive accounting experience, including 2 years managing accounting staff.
- Active Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license.
- Thorough knowledge of U.S. GAAP and internal control frameworks.
- Experience leading the month-end close and external audits.
- Proficiency with ERP or accounting systems and advanced Excel skills.
- Leads, coaches and develops a team of accounting professionals.
- Analyzes complex financial data and resolves discrepancies.
- Explain financial information clearly to non-financial audiences, in writing and in person.
- Manages completing deadlines and delivers accurate work on schedule.
- Handles confidential information with discretion and integrity.
- Works effectively with executives, department leaders, auditors and outside advisors.
