Job Summary:
Responsible for speaking and acquiring the highest possible proficiency level of the Cherokee language with distinguished proficiency level and/or superior proficiency level speakers. Is expected to utilize skills in a Cherokee language immersion and intellectual literacy setting. Reports to and under the direction of the Manager of the Master-Apprentice Language Program.

Job Duties:
Works with distinguished and/or superior Cherokee language speakers to improve his/her ability to express abstract and intellectual concepts in the Cherokee language. Uses his/her language abilities to assist in documenting high proficiency levels of the Cherokee language for future generations to help in understanding said documented content in the highest possible understanding of said content in the Cherokee culture, world view, and philosophy in the context of the Cherokee language. Provides direction as necessary to improve, enhance, and fortify instructional and language proficiency performance for him/herself and other program staff. Helps build language teaching methodology, lessons, and curriculum. Speaks the Cherokee language to program staff to assist in gaining the contact hours and content necessary in both natural language and intellectual literacy settings, using immersion and language acquisition methodology to increase his/her and other staff members to a higher Cherokee language proficiency level. Works with staff to create new Cherokee language materials that will improve the Cherokee language skills for the advanced speakers. Assists as needed to develop and improved quality of the curriculum designed to ensure success of all staff and team members. Transports participants to and from program as needed. Advises master-apprentice language, Cherokee language curriculum, and all program staff on assessment of Cherokee language skills, including designing evaluation tools and other assessment resources. Assists in the compilation of information, data, and analysis of Cherokee language source materials to identify any opportunities for improvement in Cherokee language acquisition methodology. Other duties may be assigned.


SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This job has no supervisory responsibilities.
Qualifications:

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or Certified as a First Language Speaker by the Department of Cherokee Language.


EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT

No additional experience required.


CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Must possess a valid driver's license with a driving history verified through a motor vehicle report that meets requirements for Cherokee Nation underwriting rating.


OTHER QUALIFICATIONS

The employee must not be and will not be under sanction by the United States Department of Health and Human Services Office of the Inspector General (OIG) or by the General Services Administration (GSA) or listed on the OIG's Cumulative Sanction Report, or the GSA's List of Excluded Providers, or listed on the OIG's List of Excluded Individuals/Entities (LEIE). Must be a first language Cherokee Speaker. Depending on work location, may need to meet and maintain pre-employment and periodic background investigation and adjudication for child care.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; walk; and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.


WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
