Organizational Setting

The Animal Production and Health Division (NSA) promotes and facilitates the sustainable development of the livestock sector, integrating scientific, technical expertise and policy advice. It hosts technical networks in areas of animal genetics, feed and pastoralism, among others. It provides analysis and technical assistance and facilitates policy dialogue (including intergovernmental bodies).

The assignment is located in the Sustainable Animal Production, Feed and Genetics Branch (NSAP). The branch generates information and manages knowledge, facilitates the development and implementation of innovative solutions and provides technical expertise to improve productivity, efficiency and resilience of livestock production. The activities of the branch cover all production systems, from pastoralism to industrial, including crop-livestock integrated systems; and aim to enhance their sustainability.


Reporting Lines

The Animal Production Specialist will work under the direct supervision of the Animal Production Officer, NSAP and in close consultation and collaboration with relevant colleagues in FAO HQ and decentralized offices and partners.


Technical Focus

The Animal Production Specialist will provide technical and coordination support for the development of voluntary guidelines for the sustainable enhancement of the productivity of small-scale livestock producers. The incumbent will also provide technical input for the preparation of technical and policy documents related to improving the sustainability and resilience of small-scale livestock production systems.


Tasks and responsibilities

  • Support all the activities related to the development of voluntary guidelines for the sustainable enhancement of the productivity of small-scale livestock producers (voluntary guidelines), requested by the Second Session of the Committee on Agriculture (COAG) Sub-Committee on Livestock. This will include:
o Drafting background documents to support the consultation process for the development of the draft voluntary guidelines.
o Preparing the annotated outline and selected content of the draft voluntary guidelines.
o Collecting, compiling and analysing data/information related to small-scale livestock production.
o Contributing to the convening of regular technical meetings, including the preparation of relevant documentation and reports.
o Supporting the organization of consultation meetings, in line with the participatory, inclusive and transparent process mandated by the Sub-Committee for the voluntary guidelines and ensuring engagement of diverse stakeholders from across regions.
o Integrating inputs and feedback from the consultation meetings into the draft voluntary guidelines.
o Participating in and delivering presentations at virtual meetings, as required.
o Assisting in liaising with relevant stakeholders and FAO technical staff to collect their feedback and input.
  • Draft, review and/or edit FAO reports, manuals, guidelines, other specialized publications as they relate to small-scale livestock production.
  • Provide technical expertise to support the design and implementation of FAO field projects in small-scale livestock development – particularly small-scale dairy and poultry production – by reviewing project documents and reports and providing technical inputs.
  • Perform other related duties, as required.

Minimum Requirements

  • Advanced degree or first level degree with two additional years of experience (for consultants) / Relevant educational background (for PSA Subscribers) in Animal Science, Veterinary Science, Agriculture, or in other relevant field.
  • Five years of relevant experience in livestock sector development.
  • Full proficiency/Working knowledge of English.

  • Demonstrated ability and experience in the preparation, editing and/or revision of policy and/or technical documents related to livestock development.

  • Extent and relevance of experience in organizing international meetings.
  • Ability to edit and write clearly and concisely technical content for publication.
  • Familiarity with FAO policies and programmes, including FAO governing bodies and intergovernmental processes, is considered a strong asset.
