Caregivers at Mentor Hospital’s Med/Surg Unit provide care to adult patients with a variety of medical issues or patients preparing for or recovering from surgery. Med/surg caregivers care for a broad spectrum of patients, giving them a vast and broad clinical skillset.
This is a PRN position. A caregiver in this position works a night shift of 6:30pm to 7:00am and a day shift of 6:30am to 7:00pm.
A caregiver who excels in this role will:
- Provide or assist with patient care under the supervision of an RN, such as vital signs, weight, assisting patients with personal care and activities of daily living, patient transfers/transport, pulse oximetry, point of care testing, dressing changes, applying external monitoring devices and removing urinary Foley catheter.
- Report abnormal findings or changes in physical, mental and emotional conditions to an RN.
- Assist with keeping patients’ rooms clean and orderly.
Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
- High School Diploma or GED
- One year of recent, full-time patient care experience OR nursing student with completion of at least one clinical rotation as part of an accredited nursing school program OR military experience as a Hospital Corpsman (HM), Combat Medic (68W) or Medical Service Technician (4N0X1)
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) within new hire period
- Demonstrates proficiency in applied mathematics & reading comprehension at an 8th grade level
- Additional education/training may substitute for some/all the stated experience (i.e. mental health experience)
- Nursing students who have recently completed a minimum of one clinical rotation as part of an accredited nursing school program may substitute the clinical rotation for the required experience
- Military experience as a Hospital Corpsman (HM), Combat Medic (68W) or Medical Service Technician (4N0X1) will be considered

Physical Requirements:
- Requires full body motion to move and lift patients, manual finger dexterity with good eye-hand coordination; involves extensive standing and walking.
- Medium Work - Exerting 50 to 100 pounds of force rarely, and/or 0 to 50 pounds of force occasionally to move objects.
- Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Medium Work.
Personal Protective Equipment:
- Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
