Position Summary
The International Admissions Counselor is responsible for recruiting international students and managing Portland State University’s (PSU) relationships with agents and third-party recruitment partners. This role builds and maintains partnerships with prospective students, families, government officials, educational institutions, and advising agencies—both domestically and abroad—to advance PSU’s international enrollment goals.
Key responsibilities include:
Overseeing international recruitment, including managing assigned territories and coordinating international travel (primarily in Asia and the Middle East) for up to 2–4 weeks annually.- Supporting students with international academic credentials and those with Refugee/Asylee or Temporary Protected Status.
- Collaborating with the Office of International Partnerships and campus stakeholders to implement strategic initiatives and manage recruitment partnerships.
- Assisting the Domestic Admissions team with general duties, including information sessions, campus events, and occasional domestic recruitment travel.
This position requires knowledge of international admissions processes, student visa pathways, and the needs of students entering language programs. Regular evening, weekend, and overnight travel—including international trips—is required.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree
- Three years of full-time experience in international admission, international student advising, or closely related field
- Strong intercultural and interpersonal communication skills; strong relationship management skills.
- Extensive experience managing programs involving complex multi-cultural issues within large organizations.
- Extensive experience with enrollment management and planning and conducting extensive international recruitment
- Demonstrated computer skills including proficiency using the Microsoft Office Suite, Ellucian Banner (or equivalent), mobile technologies, Google suite of Drive products, and social media
- Demonstrated ability to interact cooperatively and sensitively with individuals from other cultures, ethnic groups, lifestyles and backgrounds, and with individuals who may not be native English language speakers
- Knowledge about all Homeland Security regulations pertaining to international students and their dependents on temporary visas, including updates in immigration laws.
- Ability to travel abroad 4-6 weeks a year.
- Ability to critically and logically analyze, synthesize, interpret, and extrapolate admission data, regulations, policies, procedures, and protocols.
- Ability to effectively manage multiple priorities, pay attention to details, and produce desired results
- Ability to communicate in a clear, friendly, and effective manner both orally and in writing with diverse constituencies
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree.
- Five years of related experience working with international students.

Total Compensation Range & Benefits Statement
Salary is dependent on several factors, and new employees will typically start around the Q1 level to allow for later growth within the salary band. PSU has a structured process for determining starting compensation, taking into account years of related experience, applicable skills, knowledge and abilities, market parity, and internal equity.
The starting annual salary for this position will be between $59,880 and $61,748 but may be negotiated above this rate dependent upon the factors above, the budget of the hiring department, and approval from HR.
