LAB ASSISTANT/PHLEBJob Description:

Essential Functions:
Specimen Accessioning and Processing
- Accurately registers patients into the Meditech System and enters test requests according to orders.
- Properly labels, receives and processes specimens according to laboratory protocol and distributes specimens to the appropriate testing areas in a timely manner. Centrifuges, aliquots and labels specimens.
- Reviews and resolve specimen issues. Communicates in a timely manner to clients, and laboratory staff.
- Utilizes principles of pre-analytic variables in the processing of specimens.
- Checks and maintains proper inventory levels of supplies.
Client Services
- Answers telephone professionally by properly identifying oneself and department. Interacts with requesting departments, physicians’ offices, etc. with patience, tact, and courtesy as demonstrated by no legitimate complaints annually. Inspires confidence in caller.
- Makes every attempt to serve as single resource in answering customer questions completely, avoiding unnecessary hand-offs and transfers. Refers complex questions to the appropriate supervisor or technologist.
- Takes complete messages and routes appropriately and in a timely manner.
Patient Registration
- Performs a full/short patient registration.
- Obtains all required billing information
- Order Entry
- Selects proper tests, clinicians, test priorities, special instructions
- Advance Beneficiary Notice
- Utilizes ABN Software according to policies
Phlebotomy
- Performs phlebotomy procedures using defined protocols outlined in Phlebotomy Procedure Manual.
- Responds to STAT request in a timely manner
Scheduled Hours: 40 hr/week, rotating weekends and holidays
Work Shift: Evenings
Education Required: High School diploma. Medical Assistant graduate or successful completion of an approved accredited phlebotomy program preferred.
Licenses, Registrations, Certifications Required: Maintains Heart Saver or BLS. National certification preferred.
Required Experience: 6 months related work experience desired but may be waived depending upon applicants’ apparent strengths and abilities.
