Laboratory Information Systems Specialist
Location: New York Cancer & Blood Specialists (NYCBS) –Port Jefferson Core lab
Schedule: Full-Time | Day Shift or As Assigned
Starting Salary: $34.00 per hour
Reports To: Director Of LIS
Position Summary:
New York Cancer & Blood Specialists (NYCBS) is seeking a proactive and detail-driven professional to serve in a dual capacity as a LIS Associate and Laboratory Biller. This dual role is responsible for supporting and maintaining the Laboratory Information System (LIS) to ensure smooth and accurate workflow processes across lab departments, while also ensuring the accurate capture, coding, and submission of laboratory billing data.
Key Responsibilities:
LIS Associate Duties:
Support LIS maintenance including test build, workflow configuration, user access management, and troubleshooting
Monitor data integrity between LIS, EMR, and billing systems
Assist in validation and testing of LIS upgrades, new test builds, and system modifications
Serve as a liaison between the IT department, lab operations, and billing teams for system-related tasks
Provide LIS support and training to laboratory staff as needed
Troubleshoot LIS errors impacting test results, workflows, or billing output
Billing Duties:
Review and verify accuracy of lab requisitions, CPT coding, ICD-10 codes, and payer policies for billing submission
Submit clean claims electronically or via paper for both in-house and reference laboratory testing
Monitor accounts receivable and follow up on unpaid or denied claims
Communicate with insurers to resolve billing issues or discrepancies
Respond to internal and external inquiries regarding billing processes and procedures
Ensure all billing documentation is compliant with Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial payer guidelines
Qualifications:
High School Diploma or equivalent required; Associate's or Bachelor's degree preferred
Experience in LIS support preferred
Familiarity with laboratory information systems (e.g., Orchard, Epic Beaker, SoftLab) and EMRs
Laboratory billing experience a plus
Working knowledge of CPT, ICD-10, and HCPCS coding as it relates to laboratory services
Excellent organizational and communication skills
Strong attention to detail and problem-solving ability
Ability to work collaboratively across departments to resolve issues and improve processes
