This posting is for a legal assistant position at The Chambless Law Firm, PC. This is a newly established firm that is taking over the established practice of Myers & Wingate, LLP, and will practice primarily in the area of civil defense and insurance defense law. Though prior experience is preferred, it is not necessary. The position requires attention to detail and a willingness to use and embrace technology for drafting documents, managing client files, and tracking hours billed by the legal assistant. In the long term, there is a potential for some work from home arrangements, but only after the right candidate learns and masters the position and its role.
Duties
- Assist in preparing legal documents such as pleadings, discovery responses, discovery requests, open record requests, and correspondence;
- E-file and e-serve pleadings and documents upon courts, clerks offices, and opposing counsel;
- Manage and organize case files and maintain documents in electronic filing systems and physical paper files;
- Handle incoming calls, emails, and correspondence with clients and other parties in a cordial and professional manner;
- Proofread legal documents for accuracy and completeness;
- Assist with document review processes and maintain confidentiality of sensitive information;
- Track and record time expended on client matters for billing purposes;
- Read, comprehend, and comply with state law on civil procedure, evidence, and discovery; superior and state court rules; and any applicable local rules.
Experience
- Proficiency in using Microsoft Word and Adobe Acrobat for PDFs;
- Use of technology, including cloud-based file storage and sharing services;
- Phone etiquette skills are required, as are competent written communication abilities (or at least a willingness to use software-based proofreading options.);
- Previous experience in conducting legal research and drafting documents is preferred but not necessary;
- Ability to proofread legal materials with a eye for detail.
