Job Description
The Microbiology Operations Team Lead plays a key role in supporting microbiology laboratory functions and guiding team performance within a regulated, technical environment. This position is responsible for overseeing daily microbiology lab activities, ensuring compliance with quality standards, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement. The ideal candidate will combine hands-on microbiological expertise with strong leadership skills to drive operational efficiency and team success.
Microbiology Laboratory Operations
- Coordinate and manage microbiology training programs to ensure staff competency and cGMP compliance.
- Lead investigations related to out-of-specification (OOS) results, contamination events, and environmental monitoring (EM) excursions.
- Oversee routine environmental monitoring of cleanrooms, compressed gases, and water systems.
- Schedule and track calibration and maintenance of microbiology laboratory equipment.
- Review and verify microbiological test data, including bioburden, endotoxin, and sterility results.
- Utilize the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) for sample tracking, data entry, and reporting.
- Maintain and report on laboratory productivity metrics and monthly performance summaries.
- Perform media qualifications and microbial identification procedures as needed.
Leadership Responsibilities
- Lead and support microbiology team members in a regulated laboratory or manufacturing setting.
- Promote a culture focused on quality, safety, and continuous improvement.
- Manage daily scheduling, onboarding, and training of lab personnel.
- Coordinate weekend and overtime coverage to ensure uninterrupted lab operations.
- Mentor and support group leaders in their professional development.
- Apply Lean principles to streamline workflows and enhance lab efficiency.
- Participate in hiring, team-building, and engagement initiatives.
Qualifications
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology, Life Sciences, Chemistry, Engineering, or a related scientific field; or an equivalent combination of education and directly relevant experience.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience leading teams in a laboratory or technical environment.
- At least 3 years of hands-on laboratory experience, preferably in a cGMP-regulated setting.
- Must be authorized to work in the United States without restriction or sponsorship.

Additional Details:
This is a full-time, onsite position based on a second shift schedule (Monday through Friday, 2 pm-10:30 pm), with occasional weekends and overtime required as needed. Candidates located within a commutable distance to Rensselaer, NY, are strongly encouraged to apply.
