Provider Liaison - Specialty Pharmacy
Position Summary
The Specialty Pharmacy Provider Liaison is an embedded member of the hospital specialty pharmacy team who plays a dual role in driving both provider engagement and care coordination.
As the primary focus, this individual will serve as the key relationship builder with physicians and care teams, promoting the specialty pharmacy’s services, demonstrating its value in improving patient outcomes, and increasing provider adoption of integrated pharmacy solutions.
As a secondary focus, this individual will also support core Care Coordinator responsibilities, ensuring patients receive timely access to specialty medications through efficient prior authorizations, benefit investigations, and financial assistance coordination.
This is a dynamic role for someone who thrives at the intersection of provider engagement, patient advocacy, and operational excellence.
Core Responsibilities
Provider Engagement & Relationship Building (Primary Focus)
- Serve as the trusted liaison between hospital providers and the specialty pharmacy.
- Build and maintain strong, positive relationships with physicians, nurses, and care teams to promote utilization of specialty pharmacy services.
- Educate providers on available specialty pharmacy programs, financial assistance options, and the value of integrated pharmacy support.
- Proactively identify opportunities to expand provider adoption of pharmacy services.
Care Coordination & Patient Support (Secondary Focus)
- Manage and process prior authorizations to minimize therapy delays.
- Assist patients in navigating complex specialty therapy needs, including financial support and education.
- Collaborate with pharmacists to ensure safe, accurate, and timely dispensing of specialty medications.
- Leverage the Multi-Step Order Transmittal (MSOT) work queue to optimize order processing and workflow efficiency.
- Communicate with providers, patients, and payers to remove barriers to access and ensure high-quality care delivery.
Operational & Compliance Support
- Perform data entry, benefits verification, and documentation with high accuracy.
- Support pharmacy inventory and billing processes as needed.
- Adhere to compliance standards and maintain patient confidentiality.
- Provide feedback to improve care coordination processes and provider engagement strategies.
Minimum Qualifications
Education:
- Associates degree required
- Bachelor’s degree preferred; healthcare or business-related field a plus.
Licenses and Certifications: Pharmacy Technician Certificate preferred.
Experience:
- 2+ years of experience in specialty pharmacy, healthcare provider relations, or a pharmacy operations role.
- Strong relationship-building and interpersonal skills with the ability to engage physicians and clinical teams.
- Prior authorization experience preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of specialty medications, payer requirements, and prior authorization processes strongly preferred.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present and educate effectively.
- Ability to travel weekly and visit different provider offices within the health system.
