Position Purpose
The Rental Inspector is responsible for inspecting, documenting, and ensuring the operational readiness and safety of rental equipment before delivery and upon return. This role plays a critical part in maintaining equipment quality and ensuring customer satisfaction.
Principal Responsibilities And Duties
- Conduct thorough inspections of construction rental equipment (e.g., aerial work platforms, reach forklifts, excavators, bulldozers, loaders, small general tools) before delivery to customers and upon return to identify damage, excessive wear, or mechanical issues.
- Record inspection findings, including photographs and detailed notes, in compliance with company procedures. Submit accurate inspection reports and update rental management systems accordingly.
- Evaluate the physical and functional condition of equipment, checking fluids, filters, hydraulics, electrical systems, safety features, undercarriages, and attachments.
- Identify and document any new damages or missing parts and collaborate with service and maintenance teams to assess repair needs and costs.
- Ensure all equipment meets safety and operational standards before and after rental periods.
- Occasionally interact with customers during equipment pick-up and drop-off to clarify inspection findings or gather feedback.
- Assist in inventory control and help track the location and condition of rental fleet assets.
- Performs other related duties as assigned such as minor maintenance and repairs.
- Strong knowledge of construction and industrial equipment.
- Familiarity with safety regulations and manufacturer specifications.
- Attention to detail with excellent documentation and communication skills.
- Basic computer skills for data entry and reporting.
- Ability to work independently and in outdoor environments.
- High school diploma and/or GED; technical training in mechanics or heavy equipment preferred.
- 2+ years of experience in heavy equipment inspection, maintenance, or rental services.
- OSHA 10/30 Certification
- Forklift and/or heavy equipment operation certification
- Valid driver’s license (CDL preferred in some roles)
- Outdoor and indoor work environments include job sites, rental yards, and warehouses.
- Occasionally working in extreme cold, heat/sun, temperature change, wetness, and humidity.
- Regular exposure to dirt, grease, and noise typical of heavy equipment operations.
- Ability and willingness to travel to company sites in-state and/or out-of-state as needed.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds at times.
- Frequently standing, talking, walking, sitting, lifting, twisting, bending, and use repetitive motions.
