Description

DETROIT FIRE DEPARTMENT

STOREKEEPER


Under general supervision, receives, stores, and issues supplies and maintains records in a small storeroom; assists in the supervision of a large stores operation; directs the work activities of employees engaged in specialized stores activities.

Examples of Duties

  • Maintains a variety of records that include, but are not limited to, perpetual inventory records, and time records of field crews.
  • Receives, stores, and disburses stock, equipment and tools.
  • Prepares requisitions for purchases and offers suggestions to superiors by showing facts of consumption from records maintained.
  • Devises methods and locates places for storing materials and supplies.
  • Devises methods of keeping records.
  • Directs and oversees the work of employees engaged in stores activities.
  • Contacts vendors to secure prices.
  • Monitors a petty cash fund.
  • Consults manufacturers and catalogues for specifications.
  • Ensures that storeroom and/or yards are kept in clean and orderly condition.
  • Maintains records as required including, but not limited to, records of the work performed, and costs and quantities of supplies furnished for particular jobs.
  • Operates automotive vehicles and mechanized materials handling equipment such as forklifts and dollies.

Minimum Qualifications

Qualifications (required):
  • High school graduation or GED.
  • Two (2) years of experience in handling and issuing supplies, and maintaining related clerical records.
Equivalency
  • Equivalent combinations of education and experience that provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities will be evaluated on an individual basis.
Licensing and Certifications
  • For assignment to positions involving the driving of a motor vehicle or forklift, a valid State of Michigan Operator License is required.

  • Knowledge of contemporary perpetual inventory records and accepted purchasing practices of a large organization.
  • Knowledge of customer service best practices for providing excellent customer that will build and maintain a satisfied customer base.
  • Skill in maintaining various supply records and in handling and sorting of materials.
  • Skill in operating a personal computer and using software pertinent to materials handling.
  • Ability to direct the work of others.
  • Ability to devise handling and storing methods.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records.
  • Ability to interact effectively and tactfully with departmental personnel and the public.
Physical Demands
  • Work involves frequent standing, walking, and stooping/kneeling.

Work Environment
  • Employees must possess sufficient physical agility to maneuver through storerooms, storage yards and warehouses.

RETIREMENT BENEFITS
City Employees Retirement System
As a regular City employee you automatically become a member of the General Retirement System. This entitles you to a retirement allowance after:
  • Completion of thirty (30) years of service;
  • At age sixty (60) if you have at least ten (10) years of service, or
  • At age sixty-five (65) with eight (8) years of service.
  • In the event of disability, other eligibility rules apply);
  • An early, actuarially reduced, retirement is offered after you have attained at least twenty-five (25) years of service;
  • Employees are vested after ten (10) years of service, regardless of age.
