PROJECT "ACORN"

TEMPORARY LABORER

This is a grant funded opportunity through Akron Community-Owned Reforestation Network (ACORN). Selected candidates will participate in eight-week work training program learning skills of tree planting, trimming, pruning, tree identification, invasive species control, tree diseases and ailments, tree health monitoring, and long-term tree maintenance. Upon completion of the eight-week program, participants may earn a certificate of urban forestry training. This eight-week program is anticipated to begin on September 2nd, 2025.

This is routine manual labor work.

An employee in this class performs manual laboring tasks requiring little or no skill in the use of tools to complete work.

Works as a member of a crew under close supervision or independently under general supervision. Work may require heavy physical exertion and may be performed under adverse weather conditions outdoors.

Characteristic Work

Digs out holes to be patched in streets with hand tools, adds patching mix, and tamps down. Digs and backfills trenches and excavations with pick and shovel, cuts grass using walk behind or push lawn mower. Operates weed eater for weed control. Repairs and installs guardrails, posts, and fences. Assists in laying sewer pipe and building and repairing manholes. Sweeps walks, streets, and alleys with hand broom. Shovels snow from walks and streets. Loads and unloads heavy material from trucks. Sets up traffic control equipment. Keeps parks, roadways, walks and other areas clean by picking up debris and emptying trash containers. Maintains buildings by cleaning counters, sinks, and toilets; sweeping floors; and stocking supplies. Moves or aids in the moving of heavy boxes, equipment and large and bulky items. Drives to and from job sites to transport personnel, tools, supplies and equipment. Assists with leaf removal by operating leaf vacuum hose and raking leaves. Cleans and maintains division vehicles. Communicates with other employees or supervisors utilizing a mobile or hand-held radio. Performs related work as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Ability to read and write. At least six months of paid experience in general labor work. Possession of a valid State of Ohio driver's license.


Basic knowledge of hand tools and the standard practices of labor operations.


Ability to understand and follow oral instructions. Ability to perform a variety of manual tasks. Ability to perform heavy manual labor for prolonged periods, often under adverse weather conditions. Ability to communicate in an effective manner. Ability to maintain effective working relationships with others. Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle. Competitive Examination Process

This is a classified position.

The candidates will be ranked in a standard manner based on information, records, and other data related to the candidate's ability to perform the duties of the position. If your name is placed on the eligibility list, your name will remain on the eligibility list for one year unless you are removed in accordance with Human Resource policy.

Candidates must meet the qualifications and requirements listed in the announcement at the time of examination and at the time of appointment.

RESIDENCY: Candidates who have been resident citizens within the corporate limits of the City of Akron for at least one year immediately prior to the examination and who continue to reside within the corporate limits of the City of Akron throughout the remainder of the selection process will have 5 points added to their passing grades. VETERANS: A veteran of the Armed Forces of the United States, honorably discharged from active duty, desiring a bonus of 5 points added to his/her passing grade, must submit proof of discharge in the form of a DD-214 with application.

An applicant having a valid Driver's License from another state will be accepted conditionally provided that, if selected, an Ohio Driver's License must be obtained prior to appointment. Candidates having six or more points on their driving record at the time of appointment will be disqualified from further consideration.

Temporary, seasonal and part-time employees are not eligible to enroll in employee benefit plans. In addition, temporary and seasonal employees are not entitled to special consideration for permanent or full-time employment.
