Job Summary
This position reports to the Supervisor of Communications and Translation in the Communications and Customer Experience/311 Department. The translator supports communication across the City of Dallas and its departments by providing accurate written and occasional oral translations between English and Spanish for meetings, documents, and public-facing materials.The translator will manage assigned requests and is expected to provide timely updates on project progress. The ideal candidate is a skilled translator and writer, with strong proofreading abilities, excellent command of both English and Spanish grammar, and a deep understanding of U.S. Hispanic/Latino culture.
Job Description
Overview
The Translator provides accurate written translations of documents, materials, and communications between English and Spanish. This position supports City of Dallas departments by ensuring information is clear, consistent, and accessible to Spanish-speaking residents. The translator helps maintain the City's standards, tone, and messaging across all translated content.
Essential Functions
1 Translates written materials accurately from English to Spanish and Spanish to English, ensuring consistency with the City’s tone, terminology, and brand.
2 Adapts and translates City documents, notices, and communications to ensure information is clear and accessible to Spanish-speaking residents.
3 Proofreads and edits Spanish-language content for grammar, clarity, and accuracy; reviews translations completed by others for quality control.
4 Maintains translation standards and supports City departments by providing timely, high-quality written translations.
5 Evening and weekend availability is expected as part of this role.
6 Performs other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge and Skills
- Strong knowledge of City of Dallas services, departments, programs, and community initiatives, with a particular focus on the Hispanic/Latino population.
- Deep understanding of regional Spanish variations to ensure accurate, culturally appropriate translations.
- Proven ability to translate, proofread, and edit content between English and Spanish while preserving tone, voice, and brand identity.
- Experience supporting Spanish-language content across marketing, advertising, communications, and outreach.
- Ability to review and guide Spanish-language materials from departments and agencies to ensure alignment with City brand standards
- Skilled in supporting creative development of Spanish-language TV, radio, and digital content.
- Collaborative mindset to coordinate with cross-functional teams and improve Spanish-language customer experience.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, and ability to build strong working relationships.
Education
Bachelor’s degree in Spanish, Translations or Communications
Experience
Two (2) years of professional communications experience as an English/Spanish translator in government or public setting.
Equivalencies
1 High school diploma or GED and six (6) years of required relevant experience will meet the education and experience requirements.
2 Master's degree (or higher) in Spanish will meet the education and experience requirements.
Licenses and Certifications
Not required.
Other Requirements
- No FELONY or CLASS A MISDEMEANOR convictions.
- No CLASS B MISDEMEANOR convictions within the last ten (10) years.
- No family violence convictions.
- Cannot currently be on deferred adjudication for any FELONY, CLASS A MISDEMEANOR or CLASS B MISDEMEANOR charge.
- No outstanding citations or warrants.
Salary Range
$26.65 - $31.28
The salary listed on this job posting is the starting salary range; amount offered will depend upon qualifications.
